For fourteen long years, fans have been waiting for *The Winds of Winter*. That wait has become one of modern literature’s most infamous delays, sparking endless fan theories, frustration, and a single, recurring question: why can’t he finish it?

    2. No-Community- on

Does he even wants to finish it at this point? I think the guy is afraid people will be disappointed so he takes so long, I think I will die before he finishes it

    3. Who tf cares at this point, this book has been delayed longer than joffrey was alive

He has no idea how to finish the story. The problem is that it kind of spiraled away from him. The big bad of the story is the white walkers but they hardly make any appearances for 5 books. Developing that story line and finishing all the other ones is more than a 2 book task. I think he’s realized that this story cannot be wrapped up in any kind of satisfying way so he’s just decided to die with it unfinished.

George and Pat Rothfuss should just swap and finish each other’s series.

    6. 2010: Martin says the first chapters are done!

2015: Says he won’t attend the World Fantasy Convention and will use the time to wrap up WoW.

2016: Says he isn’t writing anything else until the WoW is finished.

2017: Says he thinks WoW will be out this year.

2018: He confirms he’s been working on Fire and Blood instead (FYI – HBO wants it as source
material for House of the Dragon).

2021: Martin and HBO sign an eight-figure deal for more projects.

2023: HBO orders the series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, on which Martin will serve as writer and producer.

2025: Martin runs his mouth about WoW and comes dangerously close to the truth. He has other, more shiny, toys to keep him occupied.

      Edit: typos

He’s not finishing it because the spark has left him.

It happens to hundreds of projects literally everyday.

People don’t necessarily give up on it, but the love for it is gone and so they stop.

    8. At this point he should give it to James SA Corey (Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck). Franck previously was Martin’s writing assistant so would know Martin’s style and ideas. As Corey, Franck and Abraham previously cranked out the entire 9 book run of The Expanse in 10 years, plus several Expanse short stories and a Star Wars novel and their work on The Expanse show. Wouldn’t be the same exactly but it’s better than nothing or HBO’s piss poor excuses for final seasons

The real question is whether or not we’re getting WoW or Half Life 3 first

Stupid click bait. We’ve already given up hope. Stop posting like it’s breaking news!

    11. I still firmly believe that he’ll get his 6th book out before Rothufuss’s third book is out.

    12. “the 77-year-old writer must lock himself away to let his imagination run wild. Since Martin is constantly on tour or involved in other projects, The Winds of Winter remains on standby.”

    13. I hate the excuse that he’s too busy. If he really wanted to finish it he wouldn’t have made all these other commitments that prevent him from completing the book. He can just say he’d rather do something else or that he’s written himself into a corner. Both those things are understandable.

This article is garbage or atleast his reasoning is. Not that he needs his own space to write but using other projects as an excuse for not being in his space to write. That can only justify so much and certainly not 14 years.

I’m with other people that he’s never finishing and has lost his spark to write this book. I have no clue how much of the last two seasons of GoT came from George’s notes but I certainly bet fans reactions to the ending didn’t help reignite that spark. Honestly it’s probable that he had an ending sketched out but he’s afraid to use it because it’s close to how the show ended.

Not to mention he doesn’t need to finish. He got his bag, he has other projects. He can happily focus on other things till he’s to old to do anything anymore. I don’t see this book coming out in his life time. It might be the best for him if he lets someone else finish and him make changes.

    15. So I remember I decided to read all the books right after the first season of the show came out, and I mind thinking I better finish them quick because he’ll be bringing out the next book soon.

I remember after season 3 or 4 of the show, I kind of decided to stop watching as they were going to start going past the books, and I thought I would wait to read the WOW and DOS before watching the end of the show. Because at that point I think he had been promising WOW would be done within the year and DOS not too long after.

Honestly his fans are so damn toxic that I say good on him. Couldn’t have happened to a nicer fandom.

    17. PrinceRobotVI on

The guy doesn’t need to write books to earn money anymore. It’s as simple as that. Zero motivation for him.

    18. Direction_Kind on

Who cares. Show ruined it. I want to know when the doors of stone is coming out.

    19. suppadelicious on

Remember nearly 10 years ago when he said the book would likely be finished before the end of the year? Yeah me too

    20. Well, George is old and distracted and there isn’t a lot of reason to continue. But remind me what Patrick Rothfuss’s excuse is for Doors of Stone not being done?

    21. If you can’t write because you’re traveling talking about your books, then stop fucking traveling and finish the damn book!

    22. GordonsAlive5833 on

I think he doesn’t want to finish, or, more likely, they’re done but he doesn’t want to deal with any reviews or blowback so they won’t be released until after he’s gone.
