If Dems get power again the whole first term is gonna have to go at preventing this shit from happening again. All these failsafes supposedly in place to prevent a president from devolving into a dictator are useless when they just go along with what dear leader wants. There’s headlines all the time talking about all the illegal shit trump is doing or ignoring court orders etc… if no one’s gonna enforce anything it it’s useless

It’s going to depend on one thing, the midterms. Regardless of Republican efforts to gerrymander or suppress voting,, there has to be a blue tsunami after all this stuff they’ve been pulling Otherwise it will either mean republicans were successful at rigging/canceling elections or it will mean that significant numbers approve of what they have been doing. Either way the USA will be finished.

sounds like an important article. Any reason such important articles are always the paywalled ones? Like, legacy media doesn’t actually give a fuck to this country, perhaps?

It’s pretty infuriating to see people who not only perpetuated the system that allowed this, but expanded it, and then apparently never thought that someone may use it against the very people they swore to protect.

Independent here. The dems better quit the infighting and get behind the popular candidates in each state. If Mamdani in NY and Platner in Maine are the popular choice then get behind them! Keep in mind that what’s considered left here is centrist in most progressive countries.

He’s right, there’s no coming back from this.
Maybe in another form but probably after a civil war the like.
And fascists tend to regain power until overthrown.
Don’t see that happening, the rest of the world will leave the u.s alone since you have nukes.

Has the US survived ? It appears , from my distant vantage point , to have already fallen to pieces.
Institutions are being smashed and the nation has been overrun with pirates , nincompoops and crooked billionaires.
Project 2025 has rapidly implemented more than half its weird , destructive agenda.
SCOTUS is clearly a bad joke which has the power to widen Trump’s powers and may decide to do so.
How will they be stopped ? A Democratic Party majority is the best that can be hoped for at the midterms. A docile Senate protects Trump and he continues on. How can they be stopped ?
Years more of this to come and it appears that none of it will be good for the likes of you and me.

Then do something about it. Stop propping up all these old raggedy ass Dems who not only put us here by thinking ALL of us were overacting about Trump and impending totalitarianism, patting us on the head and telling us smarter people than us had it covered, but who now keep us here with hubris and inaction and NO PLAN FORWARD.
They’re not helping anyone, just spewing rhetoric to feel self important. The people on the ground doing the work? We’ve been SMDH for a decade watching Dem snobs riding intellectual high horses tell us lies and take money from the big donors while our elections are undermined and the deeply unpopular GOP somehow wins every swing state.
Seriously, where is the moral backbone on the ground? Courting big donors? For what? Staff salaries? Where are these hundreds of millions of dollars going?
The Dem establishment gate keeping strategy worked. It’s about raising money for Dems to pay operatives and staff and who TF cares if they win? Guess what? This strategy is failing us as Americans.
Dinner parties and high-minded ideas of rich people are simply not where Dems should be getting strategy for governance or Dem policy. It’s bonkers.
It’s brought us here today.
They sit in ivory towers discussing and writing ever-so-important intellectual tomes while the people on the ground can’t pay rent or eat.
To anyone who hasn’t seen a room full of smug, rich Dems tell everyone how smart they are, skip it. They suck. They’ve let us down and they will again unless we can recognize that their form of grift put us exactly right here.
It really is time to rebuild the party. If I see one more NYT feature about one of these smug MFrs’ “take” on where we’re at, I’m turning Independent. Grow a pair and let’s all stand up to the bullies, the uber wealthy who are so removed from real life they don’t think democracy takes WORK, just money.
Get your shit together Dems.

The result of 4 decades of right-wing propaganda, beginning with Fox (Faux) news (entertainment) in 1996 and Rush Limbaugh‘ national radio show in 1988 immediately after the Reagan Administration’s FCC, 4‐0 1987, decision ending the ‚Fairness Doctrine,‘ all 4 votes by Reagan appointees, although no more than three members were allowed to be from the same political party. Does this sound like a familiar ‚rule breaking‘ pattern, a convenient set-up for a 4th vote from a DINO, happily appointed by Reagan? 40‐years of right-wing propaganda and the gutting of American manufacturing jobs have significantly helped to change the US political landscape.

Unless there’s a massive culture shift among American conservatives, the next fascist is right around the corner, and they probably won’t be as incompetent as Trump is.

Trump is the exact endgame that George Washington was worried about in his farewell address regarding bipartisanship. He was worried if the govt was reduced to 2 opposing parties that gridlock and tribalism would prevent the govt from functioning properly. There are so many checks and balances and consequences for what Trump does, but they only work if the other govt branches are willing to use them, and the antagonistic nature of current politics means Republicans NEVER will hit the brakes on him.
