It’s comedy, which is hard to translate across languages and cultures.
This comedy doesn’t attach South Korea at all, and it totally mocks US President Trump.
The summary is, Trump really want’s to be a King or Authoritarian dictator. While the people of the US recognize the gift as very prestigious, the president may take that as being crowned „King“, which is what he desires but can not have, without the collapse of the US democracy.
I would like to provide some context, if I may.
The Daily Show is a comedy news show – meaning that the news is reported in an exaggerated manner, sometimes in a satirical fashion.
This particular anchor, Desi Lydic, very often plays a character in her segments. Sometimes she will lean into the „dumb American blonde“ stereotype, sometimes she will lean into the abrasive American stereotype.
Additionally, she is acting overly angry in that segment due to the fact that Americans are protesting Trump’s actions via protests titled „No Kings“ protests. Simply, Trump is ignoring vital Constitutional rights, like a king would. Desi is highlighting that irony with the presentation of a golden crown about a week later.
I do understand how it could come off rude to you, and I ask you to please try to understand that Americans cope through humor. I understand that perhaps Koreans do not, though! 🙏🏻 our anger is directed towards Trump, not our allies, and we are struggling to cope as a nation right now.
My wife was pissing herself laughing at this bit. „You just give the idiot a shiny toy crown, and you get a nuclear sub in return!“
