A rather peculiar choice of headline. The suing was of course done on the 5-year-old’s behalf, through his mother. There’s no young legal prodigy here, which would have admittedly made for more exciting reading!

I should walk into a restaurant doorframe. Might get a couple hundred out of it

Fair play to him. Only 5 and has a good business head, he’ll go far this one

I’m not sure I’m comfortable with large payouts where it doesn’t seem like the medical staff did anything wrong. Shoulder dystocia is a known complication of birth where the shoulders get stuck against the mother’s pubic bone. It’s unfortunate but it’s not the hospital’s fault. The stuff about offering a ceasarean before attempting a vaginal is guff. You can’t predict when it will happen.

Does anyone know if the kid will end up with long term issues with his arm?

I never really understand, what’s the money actually for? If he’ll need to pay for ongoing therapy or if his earning potential is affected I get it but it often seems like this kind of thing is a sort of a lottery payout for having had misfortune.

As an adult living with this injury, I’m very happy this boys parents are making sure he is taken care of. The long term impact is widely under recognised – I live with chronic nerve pain, a recurring dislocating shoulder and significantly reduced range of motion which has impacted the environments I live and work. I wish him all the best for his future!
