Why the fuck are coroners elected? That is just a recipe for corruption.
The *coroner*? I’m so sick of that guy.
The idea of electing a coroner is almost as insane as the idea of a *partisan* coroner. What the fuck?
California has more than that. It’s when the Sheriff also is the Coroner. San Bernardino, Orange, Riverside off the top of my head in just Southern California.
Democrats still hold a few coroners in deep red territory. Eastern Kentucky has several 80+% Trump counties with Dem coroners
Well today I learned
Who knew caring for the dead would be dominated by ….. them.
Makes sense, the US doesn’t value education
Hey r/ShitAmericansSay we’ve got a good one here.
What the fuck? Wait, what, huh? What platforms do coroners run on? What’s the difference between Democrat and Republican coroners?
In most of California, the sheriff is also the coroner, so that means the post is elected there as well. I think we’re not the only state where that’s the case.
edit: From wikipedia: Some coroners hold office by virtue of holding another office. For example, in Nebraska, a county’s district attorney is also the county’s coroner. Similarly, in many counties in Texas, the [justice of the peace](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Justice_of_the_peace) may be in charge of death investigation.
I think this map needs some work.
They all mostly run unopposed. And the turnout in these elections are usually like single digits.
I’m from Idaho and the reason why coroners are an elected position actually made sense back in the day when the laws were passed. It was a check and balance on the police as in Idaho only the coroner can arrest the elected sheriff. This sorta made sense in the 1800s but obviously is ridiculous now.
That said it’s not like coroners are the ones actually doing autopsies as that job belongs to forensic pathologists and not a single one of them is going to give up their six figure job for a five figure one as coroner. All coroners really do here is administrative decisions like deciding whether death cases need further investigation and an autopsy. That can lead to issues as county budgets often don’t have the money for autopsies and there is also a nationwide shortage of forensic pathologists so even if you want an autopsy you may have to get in line and wait til a pathologist is available. That whole issue though would exist whether they were elected or appointed though.
So what ends up happening here a lot is you get a lot of retired cops, firefighters, and nurses who run for the position.
Lol so how does political affiliation have any effect on how you deal with dead bodies?
In San Bernardino County, the coroner is the „Sheriff-Coroner“ and is elected, not appointed.

It varies by state and maybe even by county, bit in many counties the coroner is the only one who can legally arrest the sheriff. I don’t know why.
I had no idea my home county (Putnam) in New York had an elected coroner. Apparently they have two. I asked my dad about it, since most of his family’s side has worked in the county’s emergency services, and he said all the coroner does there is go to where a body was called in and basically say “Yep, they’re dead.” They don’t even do autopsies. As to why they’re elected, he said he has no idea why but it’s always been like that.
We more maps like this!
I mean it makes sense for the sheriff to be elected. You have a check on law enforcement and it can’t be controlled by the feds
Why is coroner a partisan position
