I guess maybe he does not care , but would that not make it quite clear to even average voters that he was behind the health insurance increases? Maybe that is naive, and he would instead be praised for ending the shutdown

Then Republicans own everything 100% and it’s all on them from here on out. They can’t hide any more and let Democrats make the hard decisions. Won’t happen.

Many of the Republican Senators were in office when they were in the minority. They remeber that the filibuster is one of the few tools they have when they are in the minority.

Since Republicans will eventually be in the minority again they won’t want to lose that.

Trump is only concerned with Trump and doesn’t give a shit about the Senate. Senators know that.

    4. The filibuster is an abomination, for once Trump is right. Republican Senators don’t want to repeal it because they don’t want to be forced to vote on tough issues. It’s one thing to vote for someting incredibly unpopular (but popular with small hyperpartisan base) when you know it has 0 chance of becoming law.

Lol the only reason they haven’t is because they *know* the loss of ACA subsidies is wildly unpopular, but if they nuke the filibuster, they can’t blame it on Democrats. This will not happen.

      Trump wrote:

“Well, now WE are in power, and if we did what we should be doing, it would IMMEDIATELY end this ridiculous, Country destroying “SHUT DOWN.”

There it is. So Trump and the Republicans are in charge and responsible for a “country destroying” shutdown.

      Republican Shutdown.

    7. Lmao, of all the options Republicans have this is the worst one for them so of course he would pick that.

      >Trump went on to argue that Democrats would eliminate the filibuster if given the opportunity to enact policies like statehood for Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C.

Obviously not since they were in power during the last Congress and they did not do it.

      Eliminating the filibuster would:

      * Draw attention to the fact that Republicans are adamantly against affordable healthcare for the American people.
      * Destroy two tools they’ve used against Democrats time and time again; the filibuster and the ability to hold budgets over Democrats‘ heads.

I mean, by all means do it if you want, but be prepared for the reckoning when Democrats have a simple majority again. Then Democrats should have an easy time passing their agenda when they inevitably regain power.

I might not know much…but surely this is a shot to the GOP’s foot if they do this? Or is this a really bad sign they’re confident there either wont be midterms or that they’ll perform so well Dems will never be back in power?

Trump and his followers think exactly 3 minutes ahead.

I double dare them to do this. The cries of outrage when this bites them in the ass will be very epic. Germans have a word for it I am sure.

If Republicans vote to get rid of the filibuster, can they reinstate it before Democrats take power?

    11. Blahblkusoi on

Nuking the filibuster is long overdue. Gridlock has been the only modus operandi of congress for decades.

Can’t blame it on the Democrats after this shit. Kicking millions off of healthcare, destroying the department of education, NIH, NSF, CDC, and USAID all while raising the national debt by trillions for corporate welfare programs and a fascist police force. If there are free and fair elections in the future this bill will be political suicide as it will literally kill Americans.

I think what is important to remember is that the Republicans have boxed themselves in a corner, have supported the legality of this president, as well as destroyed democracy, they are in such a bad position that they have the incentive not to have elections at this point because they know they will be held accountable. Now this is the scary part.

    14. Here we go….lets see what they do. If they filibuster, imo, it’s proof that they have some nefarious plans for future elections, no waiting for 2026 needed.

You mean we get majority rule in the senate and the decades long obstructionism can finally end?

Either he’s not planning on midterms or is being a mercurial short myopic idiot.

Option 2 is the best case I guess.

    16. This is a huge opportunity, I really hope they get rid of the filibuster, would be the best thing Trump ever did

    17. Of course he is, the Republicans squeezed all the utility they could out of the filibuster and in the end got what they wanted. And they can dispose of it now since they have no intention of ever relinquishing power.

    18. This just goes to show that when Dems had control, they should have abolished the filibuster. But they didn’t for the sake of civility or whatever.

    19. He’s issued the talking point:

      >As I have said for years, OBAMACARE IS A DISASTER! Rates are going through the roof for really bad healthcare!!! Do something Democrats!!!

      https://trumpstruth.org/statuses/33527

Already blaming the Democrats for the ACA credits going away.

    20. Do it!—R’s will never dare to because the next time the D’s are in power, we will have all the great laws that actually benefit Americans get passed by and they won’t be able to stop them because they will be very popular like the ACA.
