People will say things like
“This won’t hurt anyone. The government just needs to figure this out or negotiate”
But that just seems to hand waive over the fact that ‘negotiate’ means paying insane amounts of money, and that the government isn’t an endless money pit, it’s us.
I’ve seen a lot of downplaying of this case on here, but most of the explanations in support of the decision seem to be exactly what the opposition doesn’t like. I’ve seen people say that this would just mean land owners would say to pay taxes to the FN and FN would give approval to land use…as if that isn’t creating an unaccountable government that is unelected by the vast majority of people living here.
“Asked if it had denied funding to such a project in the Cowichan title area because of the case, National Bank said in a one-sentence response that ‘no specific directive has been given to our teams regarding this court ruling.‘“
The company meanwhile is “loathe to discuss the situation publicly.”
I feel like this issue has massive potential to cause a nationwide political crisis within the next 10 years. There’s more than a few similar lawsuits ongoing including a [10,000+ sqKm claim in Québec](https://globalnews.ca/news/11500677/first-nation-title-claim-western-quebec-lands/) and a claim for over [50% of the land mass of New Brunswick](https://www.osler.com/en/insights/blogs/indigenous/all-roads-crown-aboriginal-title-fee-simple-land/).
What bank? What company?
Just like the homeowner who allegedly can’t get financing, this is a trivially easy thing to prove with minimal evidence.
Man! Past generations of BCers really screwed over today’s BCers.
They probably should have followed the proper legal process and not left such legal leftovers that would, eventually, bite future BCers in the assets.
