He’s an old man who has made legendary movies. Let him have his opinion.

I thought it was great. JC is a legend but beyond the (seemingly) intentionally campy script & shooting style (like the over-the-top tv executive), what beef should he have? He wouldn’t have elected to make it but that doesn’t mean he can’t appreciate it for what it is.
You could say The Substance has zero substance.
Not surprising at all. John Carpenter is quite well known for being a grumpy curmudgeon. And I don’t mean that in either a positive way or negative, that’s just how he is.
I think he misses the old style horror that did not try to be intellectual, but just appeal to the deep fear emotions.
I mean, there is space for both, but I can understand him.
Not surprising. I couldn’t imagine the story and setting resonating with him at all.
I’m grumpy now, jeez is this gonna be me if I reach his age??
It’s like they asked Gemini how to end the movie. And why didn’t Elisabeth try to find out who was behind the substance?
You know.
If someone asks his opinion on it then it’s fine. He is just being honest.
But he brought it up himself in the Q&A which doesn’t seem like a class act move.
He’s right, the Substance did suck.
He’s unquestionably a monumental figure in the horror genre, and he’s obviously entitled to his feelings, but failing to offer even a scintilla of a meaningful critique seems at bare minimum rather ungenerous. As it stands, it’s an arbitrary opinion from an old curmudgeon, and can be taken as such.
Has he ever shared his opinion on Cronenberg’s movies? Because The Substance feels like like a Cronenberg movie than a Carpenter one.
I didn’t think substance was actually good but there definitely were things to like about it. Probably could have been very good if they cut it down to 95 minutes.
I also didn’t really like the movie, but this is ridiculous. I bet he at least liked the tits.
You didn’t even like the cinematography or the color palette? Cmon there’s shit to like
The worst part? Since he was not involved, there was no way for him to make any money off of it.
Yeah I didn’t like the movie either, it’s pretty overhyped
It was fine, but also overrated imo
I liked it because it was different at least. It had lots of shortcomings but it felt risky enough to make it worth doing. Everything is such cookie cutter bullshit these days I’m just happy when somebody takes a bit of a risk.
I wouldn’t say I like nothing about it; but overall I did not walk away from the movie with a positive opinion.
For me I was ok till the pivot at the end; I get that it appeals to a lot of people but for me the tone shift took me out of the movie.
“Director of Memoirs of an Invisible Man didn’t like a movie.”
Old men being miserable because they can is really starting to get well…old
In his defense, I too did not care for the movie.
It’s called an opinion.
Sounds like someone is mad they didn’t think of it
Honestly, this is how you critique something. He didn’t insinuate people who liked it were stupid. He didn’t insult the intelligence or competency of anyone involved. We know EXACTLY how he feels about it and he didn’t insult anyone. 10/10
This is the guy that made Ghosts of Mars, right?
Also John Carpenter: Ghosts of Mars
He’s entitled to his wrong opinion
Funny. That’s what I think about Carpenter’s movies.
