Parkland isn’t some random company. It runs 15% of our gas stations and the Burnaby refinery. That’s *core* national infrastructure. And we just handed it to an American company (Sunoco) whose business model is “buy with debt, cut jobs, and squeeze margins.” There’s no new money coming into Canada, just leverage going out. It’s financed by debt that *we* now wear, and the promised “synergies” mean layoffs resulting in Canadian job losses.
Ottawa literally strengthened the Investment Canada Act this year to block opportunistic foreign takeovers like this. Then turned around and approved one. No visible undertakings, no commitments to Canadian jobs or investment. Just a quiet yes.
You have to wonder why. Sunoco’s chair is a billionaire and a Trump mega-donor. Would anyone be shocked if Washington leaned hard behind the scenes? Because rejecting this deal right before trade talks would’ve had “consequences.”
The bigger tragedy is structural. After 40 years of integration with the U.S., we’ve lost the leverage to say no. Expect more of these deals that hollow out Canadian control of critical systems while our politicians call it “foreign investment.”
If we don’t start building serious security and regulatory alliances with other democracies, we’re going to keep watching our key assets get sold off one by one until the country still looks like Canada, but doesn’t *belong* to Canadians anymore.

Why are we allowing all our key national money makers be owned by foreign entities? We need to stop giving away our futures.

Mark Carney approving the handover of critical infrastructure to the US when they’re threatening Canada’s sovereignty. Can I put my elbows down now?

Does Canada EVER block these foreign takeovers? Of course not, we want ‚foreign investment‘. Bought with debt that will result in Canadian job losses and profits leaving the country. This is such BS.

Carney needs to make concessions to the NDP, tax his rich friends and give back to the people because another election would devestate the Liberals and give the NDP power again anyways.

This is a disaster for Canada.
