If things like this aren’t on the chopping block for a revenue strained budget I wonder what is actually going to be cut. To me this says they aren’t really going to cut much and keep spending like they have been. What’s the budget deficit predicted to be now, $90B?
I thought big cuts were coming to many social services. Is this really where we want to spend over 1/2 a billion dollars?
Gender equality for the same role has already been achieved. If people choose different careers that’s not government job to equalize these careers.
Oh my fuck. Please give it up. Everyone should have equal access for any position if they are qualified. Forced quotas are dumb as balls. Please focus on what is important. We need a stronger economy, we need to improve productivity, we need to increase our buying power. This is what is important. 20 years from now, no one is going to care about gendered balanced industries. You can’t have it like that unless it’s artificially created.
Where is the audit showing how previous amounts were spent and the impact they achieved? It isn’t automatic that these kinds of programs should be renewed every year!

Hmmm, that sounds more like a preview of a Justin Trudeau era budget. Maybe the active courting of NDP support by the LPC has commenced.
Always a good cause to see promoted by the government, though I have to wonder how much of the strategy here is about baiting the Conservatives into saying things that will further hurt their standing with women.

The whole gender-quality and DEI thing is silly. Having worked in many corporate positions, the ones running the place only care about one thing: money.
Regardless of gender, sexuality or color, the CEO wants to see the person who will make them the most money hired.
Quite frankly, I’ve worked in more places where women were the majority and in leadership positions. As they should be – they were incredibly intelligent, and the hardest workers at these places.
The country is financially strapped and I really think we need to start seeing some actual evidence as to whether or not previous spending actually achieved any meaningful results in this regard.
So, this headline, while true, is misleading.
In 2025, we spent $384m on programs to advance gender equality. In 2026, we’re expecting to spend $265m. In 2027, $60m.
The article is discussing whether to spend *a total* $600m *over five years*. That is, to have the $325m already planned over the next two years, and then maintain about $90m/year for the following three years.
An honest headline would read „Carney to allow three quarters of gender equality budget to lapse, will maintain skeleton crew for gender-based violence research“.
