I thought he did this right thing tbf. He left before he was violent. He took himself out of the situation to protect his wife, child and himself. That was the best thing he could’ve done. He recognised he was unhealthy and acted.

It’s no excuse but as the article noted, he was out of control with his drinking. In most cases they do not leave voluntarily so for that, I respect him.
For most addicts, their actions will speak loudest for better or worse. I really admire the likes of Hopkins and Gary Oldman who were able to leave behind what was killing them (and those around them) a long time ago. I’m sure their position of privilege helped but rich or poor, addiction is not easy to crawl out of.
