So Blackrock, OpenAI/Stargate, and now AWS making big data center moves in SK in the past 2 months.
Something is definitely brewing here

AWS already has a dozen or so data centers in Korea, but nearly all of them are in or around Seoul.
However, almost all are either colocation, or wholly owned by other companies who lease to AWS.
AWS is investing mostly in equipment – the majority of which comes from overseas and in the case of server racks, comes preassembled.
Korea is though benefiting, directly, from the difficulty and cost of constructing new Data Centers in Japan.
What will be interesting is to see where the new Data Centers end up, because there is some nimbyism involved from locals – see the banners protesting the construction of Data Centers in Goyang, for example. Additionally, the government is increasingly keen for them to be built far from Seoul too.
