SS: Tal Hartuv was at home in northern Israel on the afternoon of Oct. 11 when she saw the list of Palestinian prisoners slated for release as part of the Gaza cease-fire deal between Israel and Hamas. She recognized a name: Iyad Fatafteh. He was one of two men convicted of stabbing her multiple times with a machete and murdering her American friend 15 years ago.
For many Israelis, the hostage-prisoner exchanges have become a tragic ritual that secures the release of Israeli captives but comes at a steep price, one which they say virtually ensures there will be future attacks against Israelis and further attempts to kidnap them, knowing it can lead to large-scale prisoner releases.
Hamas has said the releases freed the vast majority—87%—of Palestinian prisoners serving life sentences in Israeli prisons.
This will keep happening as long as the international community abets the Palestinians by allowing them to start at the same negotiating point no matter what they do. The international community insists on starting at the „1967 borders“ (actually a ceasefire line from 1949, where the invading Arab armies were stopped by the Israelis they had invaded to slaughter), no matter what happens.
Collectively, we must tell the Palestinians that they need to compromise or start losing more and more.
