I can already see Russia’s going to ignore the mining ban and not one country will do anything about it other than writing a stern worded statement and putting sanctions on them that will do basically nothing. I mean maybe if they stopped this frivolous war in Ukraine they wouldn’t be looking for more oil to mine, Maybe they’d still have their oil refineries, but this is “wishful thinking”

I know this thought is naive perhaps, but I think Antarctic should belong to nobody. If in the future its feasable to extract ressources from there, every nation should profit equally.

I’m absolutely not an expert but beyond the moral questions of exploitation….how in the frozen hell is this economically viable for Russia, or well anyone?
The ocean around the Antarctic is notoriously turbulent which I believe would make this challenging area to extract oil. Additionally, where is the refining going to be performed? Chile, Argentina, Australia, South Africa?
Finally, Russia is not short on oil/natural gas either within itself or nearby. It currently has difficulty refining or exporting that oil and gas due to its decision to become a top tier warmonger, but the reserves are there.
Not saying that there is some corner talking about this in Russian society but it’s extremely unlikely that anything will come of this weird story.
