Are they really being laid off due to AI, or is Amazon doing a regular layoff and yelling „AI“ to keep the stock price up while cutting staff.

Yesterday it was 30,000.

Can we use AI to replace executives, I’m all for that we can then axe their bloated wages too

yesterday it was 30k
is this an additional 14k or did the number of actual layoffs shrink?

Not because they have to, just because they can.

Yesterday they were cutting 30k corporate jobs. Weird

The real question is, are these jobs H1B visa holders or are these American jobs?

Fuck ‚em. Cancelled my Prime membership a bit back. I wish I could double cancel, honestly. **Amazon is not compatible with human life.**

The fortune 500 company my wife works for is planning on doing the same this coming march. They were told to start identifying positions.

I don’t know exactly how it’s going to shake out, but I guarantee that a reliance on AI is going to backfire spectacularly.

They need the money, the CEO is in danger of only being a multi-millionaire/s

Worth remembering that Amazon have 1.5 million employees and 350,000 in these corporate roles. It’s a lot of people, and it’s sad, but it’s a small percentage for such a large organisation. It’s not quite the ‘AI taking everyone’s jobs’ that these articles imply. They also, like many companies, massively overhired during the covid years, and some of this is a correction to that.

The future looks bleak, AI is already costing far more jobs than it’s creating and that’s only going to accelerate. This is nothing like past technological advancements, this is a net negative without something like universal basic income to prevent catastrophic unemployment rates within the next decade.

This has nothing to do with AI. My department is facing this right now. Simple cost cutting.

well too bad amazon but for what it’s worth, you will not get me back as a costumer because of james bond, denis villeneuve (sorry denis) or sydney don’t remember her last name.
employees that served you well are « deleted » for no reason; you don’t need to be more efficient, you are rich more than you could share if you wanted. just remember the pendulum…

30k. I know people who were just caught up on this. Amazon really does seem to think they can sprinkle AI dust on their systems and everything will work like magic. Expect more qualified people leaving after the layoffs, because of how the actual workload increases.
Then expect the fad in a few years to switch again and companies to start overhiring, while experts have moved on to good companies that treat people right or just left tech entirely.
