Its so funny that its the german gov of all that doesnt put us into western europe, when 95% of the people I know see themselves as western european.

    2. So Sweden is Eastern Europe? That’s… not in alignment with my mental model.

I wonder why Spain isn’t included in most of those? It’s like way West geographically .

So what are Spain and Portugal? West-Western Europe? Strange how none of the definitions aside the ones from Google and the Cold War era included them.

As a Dutchman, I’d include GB, Ireland, Italy, Spain and Portugal in the same sphere as us. We definitely have cultural and historical overlap.

Excluding Spain and Portugal from western europe is mind boggling to me. My revolutionary contribution is that unless you’re explicitly making a northern and southern divide as well then it’s fine for western europe to cover Scandinavia and Malta; and since we talk about east and west way more often than north and south we should generally just assume we’re not including a north-south aspect

To have a Southern Europe but not a Northern Europe seems pretty inconsistent.

    6. I guess this is a western, eastern southern and central Europe question.
Must be why Spain is left out of almost all (except the US Google definition).
I’d be interested to see a map of all of the cardinal points. Especially as Northern Europe is in all of these Western maps, but is that better names Scandinavia?
      So confusing!

    7. To be honest, I strongly think the answers will wary a lot by the question posed. If there’s only a western and eastern side you will get different answer than if there’s a north/south/West/east or even a central europe.

    8. My grandpa has an old soviet atlas where Western Europe is all of Europe except the Soviet Union
