You can’t view a country as a reliable ally and trade partner when the leader (a corrupt felon) will cut off trade negotiations and impose tariffs due to an ad. trumps actions is only emboldening and strengthening china in terms of global trade. While weakening the US ability to make deals and rely on allies for support.
If trump was smart, he could have isolated china. But when you make all of your allies an enemy, they will look elsewhere.

Canadas largest trading partner is the US at the moment. Quite frankly while things are not completely a mess at the moment, based on how things where going the smart thing is to try and diversify. Let’s be real the amount Canadas diversifies over the next few years is not ganna be enough of off set how heavy it trades with the US, but it does put it in a better position long term to have more trading partners.
The bigger issue for the US is if China becomes a big enough partner they will never get the ability to have Canada align as easily against a China, because it becomes harder to see benefits there when they can retaliate with trade (they do this now, but if they have larger access to a market they have larger impacts). Welcome to what the US choose to trade for. They used to command a lot of soft power, they could for most things get Canada and other partners to align on there priorities, now it becomes what do I get from this relationship for that action to be worth it.
Who can blame Canada? Our word is worthless, our President is insane and probably a Russian asset, and we have an entire political party that’s just a hot racist xenophobic mess. China may be an authoritarian State but at least their word is good.
