Of course employees feel the pain. But Democrats ending the shutdown without being met on their demands (demands in the public interest!) is a surrender. Trump didn’t make good on his threat to massively fire employees in a shutdown not due to any court actions (he doesn’t give a shit about the law, and SCOTUS will support him anyways), but because of political optics (his own party dissented against it, rightly fearing public backlash).

Any surrender to Trump raises his legitimacy and will enable far worse actions on his part (including against government employees) than holding the line. Never appease dictators.

Maybe ask the party in power to come to the table to negotiate in good faith?  Too much to ask…

    3. Why are they complaining to democrats? They should be begging republicans especially Mike Johnson. He refuses to negotiate.

    4. There’s no difference to ending the shutdown via nuking the filibuster or Democrats passing the bill as is.

      Why so afraid, GOP?

      It’s yours, own it.

    5. Democrats are fighting for working people. Unions can choose to do that too.

    6. Ending ACA subsidy extensions at the end of the year will be catastrophic for tens of millions of Americans. The working class is going to lose insurance because they won’t be able to afford the premiums. The top earners, the billionaires, will receive tremendous tax breaks.

    7. So a group of people with insurance from
their employer are urging Democrats to not hold out for the ACA subsidy cuts to be rolled back?

That seems kind of “fuck you, I got mine” of them.

It’s the GOP’s shutdown. The union should be hammering them!

    9. A union calling for Dems to calm down while a Rep president calls for collective bargaining rights for the feds to be dissolved is a new flavor of stupid. Fuck that guy for even writing the letter.

    10. Republican government, Republican Senate, Republican shut down. Go cry to the Republicans.

The GOP controls the house and the senate. Not sure what this shutdown has to do with democrats

Look at the facts. Democrats have a bill already to be voted on that would en the shutdown and provide for a budget that goes beyond Election day meanwhile The gop has no plan beyond the continuing resolution that would keep the government going for *checks notes* another two weeks at this point.

Is it the union asking this or just the head of the union? According to what information is available, he makes upward of $200K per annum.

They should be against Republicans. Dems have one demand: fund healthcare. I feel like that’s not a hard ask to not let our people die of preventable diseases, but apparently feeding your masses is impossible because they wanted to demolish the white house.

CNN, very nice phrasing of the headline to imply Republicans have no control of the situation and assign blame to Dems.

    16. Republicans win because Even when Republicans control every branch of government the people still blame Democrats

    17. Aromatic-Wall-664 on

This is not the union requesting, it’s just one man. This is a misleading headline. This is straight up lies by CNN.

Why won’t anyone mention how Democrats bailed Republicans out back in March from a govt shutdown ??! Enough of this bull shit. Let MAGA come to the negotiating table.

    19. What the fuck are democrats who have DONT POWER IN ANY BRANCH OF GOVERNMENT RIGHT NOW GOING TO DO

    20. Weird headline CNN. Feels like it’s blaming the dems and not the party in control of all 3 branches of govt for it not working?

    21. jorkin_peanits on

Always the democrats responsibility to do the responsible thing, never the republicans

    22. InsomniaticWanderer on

The democrats don’t have the power to do anything. Republicans control every branch right now.

    23. From the AFGE statement:

„None of these steps favor one political side over another. They favor the American people – who expect stability from their government and responsibility from their leaders.“

Anybody know why CNN is only interested in reaction of the Democrats? The ones standing firm so our health care costs don’t skyrocket?

    24. The pentagon literally took a bribe to keep the military paid through this crisis. I hope republicans are planning on bribing the ATCs soon, because the federal workforce is about to hit a fucking wall, and having paychecks for the soldiers is only going to go so far when commerce grinds to a halt.

    25. That’s fucking stupid…

Democrats should not cave! Republicans need to find their spines and actually work to improve all citizens lives not just the richest ones. I do wonder how this will end with the level of showboating the Republicans are doing.

    26. Gonna have to dig in. The democrats cannot drop their demands lest we truly lose this country. At this point we have to go all the way with this shutdown

    27. StreetwalkinCheetah on

Republicans seem to be winning the talking point that a “clean resolution” = “business as usual” without any acknowledgment that this was done before with budgets with less draconian cuts. Passing the CR will allow all the big beautiful bill’s cuts to go through for which somehow Democrat’s will assume all the blame somehow. It also seems to have paralyzed the Republican Party from doing even more terrible things while they shutdown the house so maybe there’s a silver lining in holding steady beyond healthcare.
