The bill will scrap fixed election dates. The Charter still requires an election be held every five years.
That means the next election, previously set for June 7, 2029, could be pushed into early 2030.
I oppose increasing the donation limit: If anything the maximum donation should be *lowered* while the rebate *increased* for lower donations
Give people 95% of the first 100 donated, but make the annual maximum closer to 1000
I’m fine with scrapping fixed dates: that was an Americanism that never made sense in our system
A massive increase in campaign donation limits should make people very upset. Hopefully it gets people mad enough to be out in the streets. This only benefits the wealthy and shifts Ontario politics closer to the shit show we see south of the border.
Fixed election dates never made sense in a Westminster system anyways for exactly this reason, that the legislature can always pass a new law.
This fucking guy. Calls an early election to his benefit, now will definitely stretch out his term another year. All while changing rules to allow his rich donors to tilt things further in his favour.
That’s almost triple what it’ll be federally.
This is unacceptable, it’s essentially bringing back the old $5000 plate dinners the Wynne government used to throw, that’s all this is.
Ford’s Government:
– has Budget/Spending habits like Kathleen Wynne’s Government
– has constant corruption scandals like Kathleen Wynne’s Government
– provides insider access like Kathleen Wynne’s Government
We literally voted in an extension of the 2002-2018 Liberals. Patrick Brown would have been better than this for God’s sake.
The recently exposed racket of the Ford government diverting training funds to donors proves that donation limits are already far too high.
This would be a great time for the opposition parties to promise a reduction. But they won’t, because they just want their own turn at the pork barrel.
Fixed election dates never made sense in the Westminster system.
Increasing donation limits is just dumb. The last thing we need is more money in politics.
I’m not a fan of the donation limits, but do agree with ending the so called fixed election date law. There is more than enough money in politics as is, that there’s no need to increase it that dramatically. Money is a source of influence, and those with it, are more able to buy their preferred politics than those without.
Okay everyone, I’ve been following this since 2021. Not many people really paid attention when Ford already increased the cap.
This is really bad for the NDP and Ontario Liberals. Like, existentially bad.
But, I have a working theory, absolutely untested, that this has had a positive impact on political discourse in this province. We’ve seen angst-fueled populism become infectious in BC at the same time that Ford has largely distanced himself from the fringes of his party. I suspect its because larger donation limits encourage right-wing parties to seek support from „deeper pockets“ instead of appealing to the lowest common denominator to fuel small/individual contributions.
So, essentially the BC Liberals collapsed because they couldn’t rely on „big plate“ dinners. Now, you have the BC Conservatives in their place and that party is a festering sesspool of ideas right from your grandparent’s facebook groups. But the Ontario PCs returned to the centre-right because they started relying more on Bay Street funding instead of pissing off rednecks in email blasts.
Danielle Smith also wants to do this and I think the long term impact will be that the fringes in Alberta have to compete with moneyed interests in Edmonton and Calgary.
How come it feels like this Conservative Party is taking a page out of the American maga movement?
Making announcement after announcement to get people riled up and then put some sort of reform in place when everyone is not paying attention?
I agree with both of these, oddly enough. As many have said, fixed election dates make no sense with our system of government. And I’m sorry, our donation limits are so low that our parties are slaves to clickbait bullshit to get enough people donating. $5K is perfectly reasonable.
