Scary that we have to grovel to the EU not to bill us billions when overall our carbon footprint is minuscule in comparison to countries across the globe..

    2. If the lower figure of €8 billion in fines is true, we could build the Shelmalere Offshore Wind Farm four times over.

Wow, between 8 and 26 billion euro cost.

When we set our sector targets the government made unrealistic goals for energy and transport which they knew we would never make. All so we could pretend agriculture is sustainable. I know a lot of farmers want agriculture to be sustainable. The CAP payments needs to incentivise growing crops to support farmers to move away from sheep and cattle farming.

    4. Our lobbying campaigns in the EU rely on goodwill, which will be lacking given our lectures on “militarism”. Besides which, who signed us up to this crazy target?

While Ireland’s Agriculture sector makes it unique within the EU, it doesn’t really excuse how farmers are basically immune to consequence incompetent/shady farming practices cause environmental harm. All the EU has to do is to point that out and Ireland’s main defence collapses.

Discount? The only acceptable response is that the EU makes it _less_ difficult for us to lower emissions, instead of making it more difficult!

    7. It’s easy to give away somebody else’s money. It’s extraordinary that the government would sign up to an arrangement that would jeopardize the finances of the state to such an extent. Reckless.

    8. Food and energy security are non-negotiable in the current volatile geopolitical environment we now live in. These targets need to be ignored, ridiculous.

I have no desire to pay these taxes. If they were serious about implementing them then they would levy politicians salaries for missed targets. This is just another tax.
