    1. We’re always taught about the Holocaust but the sheer ratios of the atrocities are just mind-boggling. There are only about 15 **million** Jews worldwide, and still significantly fewer than before the war

You see plaques on the ground in Berlin in front of apartments, often with roses and candles on them, all over the city with names of the Holocaust victims that lived in those buildings. Fuck Nazi’s forever.

    3. It’s also important to note that the (official, legislative) persecution of Jewish people by the Nazis started *years* before WW2 officially started. It didn’t come out of nowhere. It was a slow build while much of the world either sat on their hands or even cheered the Nazis on, buying into their rhetoric.

Seems important to remember given some of the things going on in modern times.

80 years later, while the global human population has increased 4x what it was then, the Jewish population is still smaller today in absolute figures than it was before the start of the Holocaust.

    5. The strategic reason for sending Hungarian Jews to Auschwitz is lost among many westerners.

Hungarian is a VERY HARD language. It’s not Slavic or Romance or Germanic. It sounds like nothing you’ll ever here again until you leave Europe. The only other languages superficially comparable are Finnish and Estonian but those two countries were only recently liberated from occupation before WWII and their Jews usually spoke the main colonial languages (Swedish/Russian) more so than Finnish and Estonian.

So basically these Hungarian Jews had no chance to escape or coordinate with the Polish resistance. There’s so many stories of ethnic Poles and Polish Jews realizing they can’t help the Hungarian Jews escape because of the language gap.

It was a well planned and success genocide. Given the logistic challenges it’s fucking impressive how the Nazis pulled this off. Never ever underestimate Nazis and Fascists. They only pretend to be stupid to seem innocent. They are very smart and very organized.

The reason why the disproportionate number of Jews were captured by the Gestapo was because on the census the Dutch government asks about religion, so it was extremely easy to find out who the Jews and Gentiles were.

Damn, those were some of the darkest days.

This century’s genocide (or whatever you call it) is not as big in comparison, but this not make it OK anyway.

I have a family tree in my basement which goes back to the late 18th century. Marked with sombre detail: 14 of my direct ancestors died in 1944. The youngest was my great aunt who died aged 18 months, and her sister who died aged 3. Budapest.
