Submission Statement: The most bizarre of Glidden’s claims was that he discovered a mythical prehistoric race of fair-skinned blue-eyed giants who formerly inhabited Santa Catalina and its neighboring islands, with adult men towering 7 to 9 feet in height.

“Glidden claims overwhelming proof that a fair-skinned, fair-haired, highly intelligent race of great stature lived on Catalina Island, off the southwestern coast of California, perhaps three thousand years ago, and that his excavation of a massive cache of skeletons, domestic utensils, urns, wampum, and other artifacts is quite out of the ordinary class of Indian discoveries,”

Ralph Glidden was a bit of a con man and had reasons to make these claims.

[the Island was owned by the Wrigley family, of the Wrigley gum fame](https://ictnews.org/archive/the-sick-obsession-of-dr-glidden-his-museum-built-with-sacred-bones/)

Ralph was allowed to dig, but it was just to be a small patch for „exploratory reasons“

suddenly, he kept finding artifacts. this excited Mr Wrigley, who kept paying Ralph every time he found something.

lo and behold, Ralph kept finding crazier and crazier shit. and getting paid more and more money. some of these „giants“ seemed to have extra vertebrae, like someone combined skeletons to make a longer spine.

eventually, [the Heye Foundation found that Ralph was shipping in skeletons from outside of California to „discover“ on Catalina island](https://www.penn.museum/sites/expedition/from-the-archives-george-heye/) and the jig was up. he went broke, and ended up selling his REAL personal collection to Wrigley for $5000, even though it was valued near 20k at the time.

he did so because Wrigley threaten to sue him for the money he paid him.

On top of Glidden being a known conman and fraudster I want to point out the idiocy of the story.

      * He could tell they were light-skinned purely by bones.
      * He could also tell their eye color, from bare bones.
      * The presented „evidence“ looks like someone hodge-podged several skeletons together, which tracks with his importing of skeletons.
      * These supposed giants are found here and nowhere else. Not even a scrap. Highly intelligent, but couldn’t figure out boats.
      * These highly intelligent, physically superior people also apparently built no large structures, as none of those were found either.

      The list just keeps going…
