    1. *The justices could hand Trump the power to deploy troops anywhere, anytime — and against Americans.*

      The ultimate power grab. He is preparing for his third term.

      I love how the media throws around „could“ like they’re just speculating casually on something, not discussing a military coup by the US president

      „I am confident that our military would not obey unlawful orders“

      Yeah, what about every orders is lawful according to SCOTUS?

    4. As far as brutal dictatorial army goon squads go, those of us under the boot could do worse than the national guard.

      I, for one, am not afraid of a weekend warrior with minimal training who can’t even fit into his camouflage.

      If that’s his republican guard, so be it.

    5. NewTimeTraveler1 on

      If you’re in the national guard,  what are the ways to get out? Like a back or leg injury which lays you up? Or a diagnosis of mental issues?

    6. To all of the people wondering how 1930’s Germany let it happen – now we know.

      Utah Phillips on why he left the military: “I will no longer abdicate to others, my God given right to decide who the enemy is”.

      Been living in my head rent free lately.

      We are in dangerous times.

    8. ICE, aside from being a jobs program for Larpers, the Proud Boys, and the Oath Keepers, is already the Gestepo for the current administration. Coup time.

      History isn’t going to remember any of these people kindly… and I wonder if the NG realize they’ll be the ones who face consequences, not the leaders, they’ll all be allowed to carry on to plot the next reich

    10. If this continues the actual military needs to do what they took an oath to do

    11. darthatheos on

      Well, I guess we’re heading for a civil war. The fucking NRA will be suspiciously busy.

    12. Practice your 2a before it’s too late and used against you. Protect yourself. Be it with food, water, firearms, whatever. Just make yourself safe.

      First Scotus made Trump immune from prosecution and now they are giving him his own personal army? What could go wrong?

      What confuses me is the national guard of every state is paid for by the state. Even when they send someone to training (trained at same locations and schools as active duty and reserves), the state pays for that training out of their own budget.

      Why I find it so ridiculous that the federal government can take over a state funded program from state taxes.

      Had the federal government paid back states for taking over their state paid troops? How about give a tax credit (federal income taxes) so the states citizens do not have to pay to compensate for stealing tax money from the state citizens (property/sales/state income tax)?

    15. Worst case scenario:

      1) State of emergency and militarization of the territory (obviously in Democratic and dissident Republican states;

      2) Scrapping federal voting laws and creating new state maps to channel and polarize votes;
      Electoral fraud through postal and/or electronic voting;

      3) Short circuit between the federal and state levels, both at the legislative and judicial levels;

      4) Definitive takeover of the Supreme Court (it sounds bad to say, but if anything were to happen to the Democratic members of the Supreme Court, the President and the Senate would appoint them);

      5) Constitutional amendments;

      6) Welcome to the new Russia

      SCOTUS „personal army“ greenlight? Trump’s third-term prep via Guard „deploy anywhere“—Posse Comitatus be damned. Military oaths hold… until SCOTUS decrees „lawful“ coups.

    17. „could“?? They already ARE acting as such, just with a couple of paper-like guardrails

      I live abroad. I want to know when I need to come home to fight this kind of thing. Working people of the world, unite

      They know the real military and real police will not go along with their future plans so they hire a new army of the deranged and desperate. Oh wait, that was ICE.

    20. How can a states right to protect itself be turned against it by the federal government? It’s crazy.

    21. “He has kept among us, in times of peace, standing armies, without the consent of our legislatures.”

      I have zero faith that SCOTUS will make the right decision. The entire governmental apparatus is broken. I can’t believe people still think just voting in the midterms without taking further action (like mass and general strikes) will change anything.

    23. Seriously2much on

      Midterms are warm ups. The general election is where the stage will be set

      „We’ve have one, yes – but what about second personal army?“

    25. Oath breakers fucking everywhere. I’d rather die fighting for freedom than live being a fascist’s pawn fighting my fellow citizens but sadly I know most national guardsmen will not hold that belief.

    26. The idiots that voted this shithead into office really fucked us. Hope your eggs are cheaper.

      Wake up journalism… wake up! I cannot for the life of me understand the casualness of these articles.

      Bro i was literally one of the few that could pass PT tests in the Guard, his personal army cares more about cheetos and license plates than his personal interests.

      The court that destroyed America. Sure Donald had a part – but they were the last line of defense and they failed us all.

    30. Dangerpaladin on

      Our military is full of cowards. That is what I am learning from this administration. They could very easily just say no. There would be literally no consequences from saying no to him. They are his power, if they just tell him to fuck off all he can do is cry on social media.

    31. Sounds about right — everything the Nazis did was also technically legal by the laws they changed to suit their needs.

    32. Abject_Giraffe562 on

      I predicted this! I didn’t think it would be guard, but I knew he was going to orchestrate his own American army of soldiers to attack within….. I KNEW IT! Dirty rotten POS.

      Conservative supreme Court justices plan to give project 2025 total control of the country.

      Once again it appears Republicans never consider position reversal.
