And it never will. There’s cheaper oil elsewhere, it’d take rivers of funds to implement, and it’d take more than a decade to become operational.
In the case of Alberta, the word „pipeline“ is their motto. That’s unfortunately the only argument they have these days even though the world’s is going away from pipelines especially those that are not providing oil but a coarser substance like dilbit which does not make economic sense.
Nobody in the private sector wants another dilbit pipeline….
Interested as to Nenshi/NDP’s approach to this issue when almost 80% of Albertans want the pipeline. I saw a video of him criticizing Smith for this; who is that video for? Not sure if his team understands his electorate doesn’t live on reddit…

What happened to Detroit and their auto industry should be a case study for Alberta, for what happens when you tie your entire prosperity to a single industry.
Detroit was one of the wealthiest cities in the early 20th century thanks to their auto sector, until rising competition and recessions made the Big 3 manufacturers leave for cheaper districts to build. Because their economy was not diversified and reliant on a single industry, the economic impacts on Detroit made it difficult for them to recover over the decades, resulting in high unemployment, poverty, and crime.
Alberta is too reliant on oil and gas. It’s great when the price of oil is high, and devastating when low. The golden age they love to boast about from the Harper years is entirely due to the global price of oil, and no domestic government can influence this, even though Albertans love to blame Ottawa for their hardships.
Alberta needs to diversify their economy beyond just oil and gas. The Alberta NDP tried to during their time in power, but Danielle Smith is hellbent on returning to their golden age. A new pipeline may help, but all this time, effort, and money spent on manifesting it would be better off trying to be less reliant on a single industry. The last thing we need is for Canada to have their own Detroit.
Smith assumes if the pipeline gets built, the customers will come. I would ask how northern gateway is going. I think a revolutionary economic shift is coming that will quickly make those who have oil less important and those who can produce resources for ai data centres more important. The next ten years should be interesting
If Carney really wants to double Canada’s exports to non-US countries, I would assume that we will ramp up our largest export (Oil) and that this pipeline will happen one way or another.
