Or maybe an alien cheerleader dropped her megaphone 😔

1. Let’s say it’s a drain pipe, what material did they use that can withstand the harsh atmosphere of Mars without it breaking apart?
2. Why did NASA released an image that includes an unusual artificial object, that is, if it is?
It’s just a case of Occam’s Razor.
Simplest explanation is it’s just a rock shaped like a pipe.

It’s most likely a combination of the perspective, lighting, and the fact that it’s a naturally smooth and rounded rock. Cylindrical rocks can also occur naturally on Earth.
I wish I could attach pictures to this comment, but I cannot. If I could, I’d post several naturally made rocks on earth that to the lay person would look like something a person made. Google hexagonal rocks for example. Many of those look like tiles that someone made, but they were made by normal geological processes. Just because it looks like something, doesn’t mean it is something.

I see everyone else given the boring, logical, most likely answer that it’s a rock. It’s not a drain pipe. It’s the remnant of a pillar from a Martian building that was destroyed when the planet was bombarded by large asteroids millions of years ago. The advanced civilization on Mars was wiped out in the devastation leaving the primates on Earth as most advanced life form in the solar system.

There are lots of things in pictures that aren’t what they seem. It happens a lot.
It’s a high contrast image that doesn’t show a lot of detail.
That looks like a fast food cup, not a dreainpipe.
It also looks like windblown sandstone.
Ever seen The Eye of the Sahara? It’s visible from space.

Great question. Here’s a reddit thread about it, with a video: [https://www.reddit.com/r/Mars/comments/1octdug/rover_curiosity_cylindrical_object_in_colour_sol/](https://www.reddit.com/r/Mars/comments/1octdug/rover_curiosity_cylindrical_object_in_colour_sol/)
The Mastcam takes colour images, so [here’s the colour version](https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpreview.redd.it%2Fgfabxld67vwf1.jpeg%3Fwidth%3D1328%26format%3Dpjpg%26auto%3Dwebp%26s%3D0f116a183e9d6650e3b4572ada8c9f91a62f01f2).
