Bild: https://postimg.cc/SjXZM9x2

The area next to old Seoul Station has been one of the homeless hotspots for a long time.

Homelessness is a big problem no matter how little or how many people are homeless. But, if we just judge by numbers, I think Seoul and South Korea as a whole are relatively homeless..less.

They tend to stay near places with a lot of by-passers. Seoul Station might be the biggest encampment for this reason. Busan Station also has some homeless people.

Seoul Starion is THE area, and in some busy subway stations like Gangnam you’ll see them set up mats/areas at night after the station closes (it’s an open thorough for going under the street at that intersection, can’t cross on the road so the station stays open for passage that way but not the platforms)

  4. Although the percentage of homeless in Seoul is small compared to any US city (by several orders of magnitude compared to San Francisco) you can see homeless people sleeping on cardboard boxes in many of the subway stations, especially those downtown (Seoul Station and Kwanghwamun).

Unlike US cities with homeless problems and public restrooms, Seoul has plenty of public restrooms that are spotless. You will see volunteer charity organizations giving homeless clean cardboard or blankets when the weather gets really cold which is also a sign that the numbers are more manageable than in US cities.

A more difficult housing problem in Korea is related to elder poverty. There are many elders who live in substandard housing and Korea has been grappling with this problem for a long time.
