      Don’t really care. Crime is near a thirty year low. It’s easy to look tough on crime. It’s hard to fix unemployment, housing, trade, healthcare, education, and creeping authoritarianism.

      No one is arguing that too many people are getting bail! The core argument is that “repeat, violent offenders” shouldn’t be getting bail at the earliest opportunity!

      The argument is that if someone gets arrested and has been found guilty of committing similar crimes in the past (within a short time period), then they should be denied bail. Alternatively, if they pose danger to vulnerable members of society, then they should be held! That’s a no brainer.

      The Zameer case doesn’t apply here, because as far as I can tell, he hadn’t been found guilty of similar offences in the past; so under the conditions I have outlined above, he should have been released. That’s a no-brainer.

      Journalists should do a better job talking about such complex issues.

      Canadians think what American owned media tells them to think. Nobody can bothered to actually look up any easily available facts on the matter. They just get mad because the media tells them to be. There is no crime wave, our cities are not warzones, children do in fact play in the streets and wander their neighborhoods without fear of abduction or gun violence.

      Conservative premiers continue to underfund the justice systems in their province. This increases the likelihood and duration of incarcerating someone before trial. 
      It’s easier to blame the mythical bleeding heart judges than actually take responsibility to help address the problem

      Judges are saying that the conditions in Ontario jails are at human rights crisis levels, primarily due to lack of funding (in turn due to a general public who doesn’t give a shit and probably would like the conditions to be even worse). We need to fix this before crying about people — who are innocent until proven guilty — receiving bail.
