News snippet: Oregon’s Democratic senator Jeff Merkley is giving a marathon speech on the Senate floor that has entered its 16th hour to make the case that Donald Trump is acting as an authoritarian, including by deploying the military into his home town of Portland.

The 68-year-old senator began speaking around 6.20pm on Tuesday evening and continued with few interruptions into Wednesday morning. Standing on the Senate floor alongside placards that read “authoritarianism is here now!” and “Trump is violating the law”, Merkley has paused only to take questions from fellow Democratic senators.

“I’ve come to the Senate floor tonight to ring the alarm bells. We’re in the most perilous moment, the biggest threat to our republic since the civil war. President Trump is shredding our constitution,” Merkley said as he began his speech.

Is there any way I can buy this guy a tea with some honey and lemon? This is old school politics that needs to be acknowledged.

    3. I am usually happy with my senators from Oregon. Merkley usually not as much as Wyden, but both do good for our state. They are moderate in the right ways and liberal in the right ways. The really do reflect Oregon. I had my parents complain that they are horrible liberal senators for our state. Then I mentioned that if they left office the replacement would be WAY more liberal, maybe even our governor running. That shut them up about that right away.

    4. Is he calling on his colleagues to refuse appointing anymore Trump nominated judges during a shut down?

    5. Democratic leadership has said from the beginning of the shutdown that they would use it as an opportunity to draw attention to Trump’s abuse of power since they can’t do much else. To anyone saying this is useless, I’ve seen coverage of this on most major outlets this morning. This could also be a good way of encouraging republicans to come to the table on the shutdown to avoid this being the current spotlight.

    6. One thing I can say about politicians is they have some stamina when it comes to speeches like this. I’d be over it in 10 minutes 😂

I hope he keeps going forever, in fact have another 50 years of life for the God work he’s doing transferred from the trump supporters they aren’t using it

How many people are even aware that this is happening?

A US Senator is giving a speech on the Senate floor about the rising fascism and authoritarianism in the current US government for 16+ hours and the media is barely mentioning it?

I think that the only US media to even mention this is MSNBC!

This is a big part of why and how things have gone this far in the United States! The media is entirely complicit in our rush to totalitarianism!

….I don’t think the other side cares. Look how bad they’ve let things get…they don’t care. Got a fancy speech? They don’t care. Have facts to back up everything? They don’t care. Are you out to prove the damage being done on Americans? They don’t care. It goes on and on…we wouldn’t be here today if Republicans actually cared.

    10. Oregon’s senators are based as fuck. I feel like they represent us incredibly well and in a way that’s unique even among democrats. I know Wyden is a million years old and has been in the senate since about when it was founded but honestly it’s tough to dislike him.

    11. Multiple Dems needs to be doing this 24/7. Rotating in and out so they keep up a constant, unwavering presence.

The list of crimes Trump and his cohorts have committed is long. I can see it taking many hours to explain it all.

I’m sure this will wake up all the Republicans and give them all a change of heart

It seems to be a trend lately that Democrats think that they can talk the Trump administration to extinction rather than implement concrete steps to retake the House and Senate.

This is the type of politics I can get behind, energized to protect and honor the constitution and the American people’s liberty.

Merkley and Wyden have been representing Oregon well for a long time

    17. Doesn’t matter how long you speak if enough people don’t care about what you have to say.

Democratic party, all speeches & no plans.
Does he believe he can sway anyone’s opinions with this stunt? We would be better served if he took his message to the streets.

    19. More of this please. In fact. Let every Democratic Senator spend some time up there. Let’s go Dems. Show us your values. This isn’t a test

Great. A long speech. Maybe he should also form a committee to evaluate other useless ways to condemn Trump. I’m sure that will be equally as effective.

    21. When polititons do stuff like this do they write it all out before hand or is he ad libbing? (accidental pun lol)
