    1. Hemm mod kif le. Jistgħu jieqfu jirreġistraw il-karozzi u l-għadd ta‘ karozzi fit-triq malajr jonqos. Ftit sagrifiċju mis-sewwieqa biex kulħadd ikun iktar komdu. Fl-aħħar mill-aħħar kulħadd imur tajjeb. Is-sewwieqa jkollhom iktar flus fil-but għax ma jaħluhom fuq il-karozzi, it-trasport pubbliku jaħdem aħjar għax ma jeħilx fit-traffiku u min vera jkollu emerġenza jaqbad taxi. Il-bqija kollu fsied żejjed dan li kulħadd irid il-karozza biex ma jaqbadx tal-linja.

He’s worrying that having too good mass transport would make it harder for the government to continue awarding multi million contract tenders to Princess Cars & Kidnappings.

I don’t think he is entirely wrong, but it’s unclear whether he is considering the introduction with or without measures to disincentivise car use.

Politicians in Malta have been clear: we will encourage and incentivise and be positive.  The moment you try to discourage car use (paid parking, congestion charge) politicians will say no.

So yes, under these circumstances, the only thing you can do is run a bus system parallel to everybody happily using their cars.

Not saying a metro is necessarily feasible though, but still, you need to push people into it.

He’s not wrong and actually speaks more sense than some transport ministers we’ve had. Personally while I love the idea for the metro, I think PNs trackless tram idea was much better.

Also just adding some bicycle and walking paths would go a long way.

Both are less costly than the digging required for a metro

solution = remote work/school when possible or 80% of time (hybrid). worked durin covid. ovvjament fuel sellers /cabs will lose money BUT its either that or lets keep enjoyin gridlocks

    6. Why not revamp the current transport system we have? It’s hardly efficient to have the majority of routes go to Valletta it’s creates a bottleneck so spread it out a few more bus terminus across the island, you can repurpose current park and rides to become better bus terminuses. Really you can’t just say no to a potential solution and not offer an alternative, if not something new then invest in the system we currently have.

Clyde is generally the only sensible and respectable person in the gov’t… But every once in a while he says dumb shit like this 😒😒

      A few points:

      1. 5km of tram/light rail track can be laid and made operational in 2 years for €150m. This is the same amount we spend annually to subsidise fuels (keep in mind that luckily oil prices are now fairly low, we spent almost double that in 2024).
      2. In a 5-year legislature and assuming starting a 5km line every year, that would lead to 20km+ of track laid before the next election (cos apparently that’s all that matters here) and cost a total of €800m. All sensible infrastructure projects are carried out in phases precisely to minimise the risk he’s so scared of.
      3. The current congestion/pollution situation dents our annual GDP by €400m. The gov’t collects about a third of the GDP in taxes so that’s an extra €133m a year into the gov’t coffers. Guess what, that pretty much pays for another 5km of tram tracks
      4. It’s not a question of spending money, it’s about taking the same money we’re already wasting and spending it more wisely.

He’s right about the metro being a stupid idea in all fairness though. It’s overly ambitious with a horrible return on investment and time to completion. At most it might be viable **after** we have an efficient tram/rail network and only to connect Kottonera-Valletta/Floriana-Gżira-Sliema by going through the rock under the harbours.
