In 2004 another version of The Scream was stolen.
Also earlier this year in january the golden helmet of Coțofenești and several golden Dacian armbracelets were stolen from a museum in The Netherlands, I’d assume that a 5.8 million euro pricetag would make it suitable for this map.

By value the Amsterdam theft of the van Goghs is probably the biggest estimated at approximately 500 million € (1 billion Dfl) at that time. Those were recovered a few hours later.

Can we rewind another 400 years and show where all these loot were actually looted from?

I wonder how many of these art/historical pieces are displayed in autocrat or drug boss mansions currently.

Prague, 1648, Swedish stealing everything in the Castle’s art collection that wasn’t (well, even if it was) nailed down.

I though it would be the greatest thefts by museums, but at this scale the map would be too full I guess

Biggest thefts of art from polish museums were made by Germans and Russians during WWII. And Swedish invasion on Poland in 1660-1665

My apologies. It’s fact. In the past my country France stole a lot of things from others civilization.

Who buys that stuff? No legitimate source since everyone knows it’s stolen.
Does it end up in some Palace of an African Warlord? Private collection of an Saudi? Cartel Boss? Or can they essentially ransom it back to the museum?
You can steal all kinds of things and fence it later. But a famous painting or someone’s Crown? Those are not exactly Items that people forget about after a while.

So what’s the end game of robbing museums of priceless, world famous artifacts that are extremely valuable and very well known to anyone interested?

There are none in Spain because those who want to steal just become politicians, no need to risk it steaking from a museum.
