Romania (Romanian Leu) and R. Moldova (Moldovan leu) have the same currency (Leu) because they used to be a single state till Russia/USSR decided otherwise. The name of the currency comes from the “leeuwendaalder“, a dutch silver coin that was also used in the romanian principalities in the 17th century. It had a lion engraved on its back. “Leu“ means “lion“ in english. In 1867 it became the official currency of the United Principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia.

Also, 2025 is the last year the bulgarian lev is still in use. From January 2026 Bulgaria will join the Eurozone and use Euro as its official currency.
