    1. [Vladimir Putin](https://inews.co.uk/topic/vladimir-putin?ico=in-line_link) appears to have pulled it off yet again. Amid reports that [Donald Trump’s](https://inews.co.uk/topic/donald-trump?ico=in-line_link) Friday meeting with [Volodymyr Zelensky](https://inews.co.uk/topic/volodymyr-zelensky?ico=in-line_link) went off the rails as soon as the cameras left the White House Cabinet Room, the Russian leader can be certain that 24 hours earlier he played his American counterpart like a violin.

Putin’s decision to entice the US President into a two-hour phone call on Thursday was designed to place conditions on the outcome of [Friday’s meeting with Zelensky](https://inews.co.uk/news/world/stop-where-you-are-trump-calls-for-russia-and-ukraine-to-end-war-3987422?ico=in-line_link). The strategy worked to perfection. By ensuring his was the last voice in Trump’s ear before the [Ukrainian leader arrived in Washington](https://inews.co.uk/news/world/trumps-zelensky-meeting-confirms-putin-leading-negotiations-3987503?ico=in-line_link), the Russian president could be confident that the Kremlin’s positions over the war in Ukraine would dominate the following day’s conversations.

As a consequence, by the time Trump and Zelensky shook hands, there was no prospect that the Ukrainian leader might secure [Trump’s promise of Tomahawk missiles](https://inews.co.uk/news/why-trump-decided-not-hand-ukraine-secret-weapon-3987674?ico=in-line_link) that would allow Kyiv’s armed forces to strike deep into Russian territory. Gone from Trump’s narrative about the war were even his most recent suggestions that [Ukraine might win it](https://inews.co.uk/news/world/trumps-chance-change-everything-ukraine-unless-bottles-it-3982893?ico=in-line_link).

Less than a month ago – on 23 September – after meeting Zelensky on the fringes of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Trump [assailed Putin](https://www.atlanticcouncil.org/blogs/ukrainealert/trump-called-russia-a-paper-tiger-because-he-believes-putin-is-losing/) as a “paper tiger” and claimed that Kyiv was “in a position to fight and win all of Ukraine back in its original form”. That U-turn was music to the ears of European leaders including Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, who had raced to Washington to join Zelensky on his 18 August visit to the White House following Trump’s failed Alaska summit with Putin.

But on Friday, there was no European entourage to support Zelensky and keep Trump on the straight and narrow. The result: a Trump tantrum. European officials briefed about the meeting by their Ukrainian counterparts said the US President angrily threw maps of Ukraine to one side, told Zelensky that he needed to accept Putin’s terms for peace or else the Russians would “destroy” his country, and insisted the Kremlin’s economy is “doing great”.

Zelensky departed the White House bereft. Trump then hammered his latest viewpoints home in an [interview with Fox News](https://www.foxnews.com/politics/from-israel-ukraine-trump-spends-week-focused-navigating-global-conflicts) that was broadcast over the weekend. “They have tremendous bad blood,” he grumbled about the two warring leaders. But describing his phone call with Putin as “a very good talk”, he indicated that Russia deserves to “take significant property from Ukraine” in any peace settlement.

“They fought, and [Putin] has a lot of property. He’s won certain property,” Trump declared, in a complete reversal of his position in late September.

    2. Its not really a master stroke. This is more like taking advantage of a special needs kid.

    3. He’s been played by every rival and traditional enemy the US has ever had, and managed to alienate all its allies. At this rate, I’m expecting the penguins on Heard and McDonald Islands to outmanoeuvre him on tariffs.

    4. Masterstroke? All you have to do is compliment the moron and he will do whatever you want. More like stroke his ego.

This doesn’t have a possible paywall, but a hard paywall.

Trump is such an Ass, with a capital A.

    6. Masterstroke? SERIOUSLY! Putin knows trump will never go against him and trump called and asked permission from Putin to send tomahawk missiles to Ukraine , Putin said no and trump said he’s not sending them. Trump runs his piehole about standing up to Putin the Putin calls and Trump grabs his binky

„President Putin says it’s not Russia. I don’t see any reason why it would be,“

      -Trump in 2018.

Putin has been pulling Trump’s strings for a long time now.

So we TACO’d the two weeks notice he gave Russia earlier? Also where’s Epstein files?

    9. Look, the Mueller Report went over all this. Putin and Russia managed to elect Trump in 2016. Full stop. Roger Stone, Paul Manafort, Mike Flynn… they are all traitors that work for Putin. Trump may be simple-minded, but he knows where his allegiance is, and he knows that the longer he can keep people guessing or worried about his positions on things the more likely they are to „blink“ and give something up. When Trump acts like he cares about Ukraine, he’s just doing his shitty salesman job of pretending to be on the buyer’s side. He’s not. At heart he doesn’t really know/care that Ukrainians are separate people from Russians. In his mind this is a civil war. He is mildly motivated by wanting a Nobel, but it’s not his guiding purpose. Putin is. He’s going to meet Putin at Orban’s house. He’s ignoring the 30,000 kidnapped children. And– most tellingly– he keeps trying to create scenarios where the US and Russia are trading partners for things like eggs or beef or such, when we absolutely don’t really need these things. We can produce our own. But somehow it’s stuck in his head that it’s helpful to Americans to buy from Russia.

Freezing the lines where they are won’t work for Putin either. Trump’s just stuck himself into another no win hole.

    11. Most likely is that Putin likes to remind pedo trump he has info that could take him down like what happened to Prince Andrew. Pedo trump doesn’t mind people dying in Ukraine if his ass is covered. It’s always been and always will be about trump.

    12. „He is Putin’s puppet.“

„NO PUPPET NO PUPPET YOU’RE THE PUPPET!“

      Guess who said which.

    13. America elected a clown, and the world ended up a circus. History won’t be kind to the fools who voted for this idiot.

He’s got his claws into many people. Anybody who dismisses the fact that Putin is secretly controlling the affairs of other countries as baseless conspiracy theories is either unbearably naïve, or happy to let him continue.

Seeing these names and the word “stroke” gave me hope at first glance. Oh well.

    16. Trump is essentially the end of the John Malkovich tunnel from the movie Being John Malkovich. He’s a puppet for whoever can figure out how to pull the strings. Compliment him and he’ll do whatever you want. In the previous admin it was people like Hannity, Limbaugh, and Bannon. Now, it’s Putin, Vought, and Miller. Blow a little smoke up hos ass, let him take credit, and you could get healthcare and shit.

      Gullible, lazy and ignorant

That’s who Donald Trump is, along with corrupt and bigoted

    18. NO SHIT

The Mueller investigation showed HUNDREDS of links between them. The idea that Putin, an intelligence agent turned dictator, isn’t leveraging his 50 year relationship with the PRESIDENT to further his agenda is literally insane.

It’s been a 40 year military campaign to destabilize American..

All they had to do was bribe politicians and use trump as the cashier for their dark money laundering to the GOP

Putin is destroying America with his bribed puppets for less that the cost of a single naval vessel.

It’ll go down as one of the greatest military victories in history…

Whoever is the last one to talk to Trump wins his support. His handlers, those who decide what calls Trump will take, control the direction of Foreign *and* Domestic Policy.

Nonsense. US billionaires simply want the same level of power as Russian billionaires.

    22. Russia has been the voice in Trump’s ear since the 1980s. They couldn’t have been certain it would turn out like this, when they started manipulating him, but there’s a whole team of people who probably couldn’t believe their luck in 2016. This is just more of the same.

Then again. It was mostly their money that paid for the social media influence that got him where he is. Maybe they don’t consider it luck, but rather a case study in how to manipulate a country until it cheers itself on while committing suicide.

    23. Im_Ashe_Man on

Always has been. It’s been obvious to the entire world since about 2015.

    24. Trump has consistently shown that he has the memory of a goldfish and is as impressionable as a puppy. As soon as someone speaks his language to him, aka showering him with flattering words and descriptions, he immediately becomes a lot more open to them and starts parroting whatever they told him. Then he will immediately change his mind as soon as someone comes along and does the same thing, while presenting the opposite view point.

Once Zelensky learned he was dealing with a toddler after his first visit, Trump went from saying that Ukraine „doesn’t hold the cards“ to Ukraine should take back all the land they have lost so far. But now that he had another talk with Putin, it’s back to telling Ukraine to give up immediately.

It’s one thing that Trump is actively destroying America’s position in the world, it’s even more frustrating that he’s doing it by constantly flip-flopping on every position while having a spine of jello.
