    1. News snippet: SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — A North Korean soldier defected to South Korea across the rivals’ heavily fortified border on Sunday, South Korea’s military said.

The military took the custody of the soldier who crossed the central portion of the land border, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement. It said the soldier expressed a desire to resettle in South Korea.

It was the first reported defection by a North Korean soldier since a North Korean staff sergeant fled to South Korea via the border’s eastern section in August 2024.

Despite the two border crossings, it isn’t common for North Koreans to defect via the land border.

What does SK grants to those soldiers? Some sort of shelter I guess, but what specifics for NK deserters?

That’s pretty impressive. NK has made it virtually impossible to escape now. They’re really cracking down on it.

Every person who defected NK has had to cross the ‘heavily fortified’ border. How else would they get out?

    5. You can cross the minefields as long as you have those super-advanced levitating North Korean tanks from that horrible James Bond movie.

My boyfriend’s dad defected at 13 years old. He is in his early 90s now and has never spoke of his time in the north.

    7. From time to time we see this kind of news either soldier or individual defects from NK to SK. I genuinely wonder whether there was a case of the other way around, someone from SK voluntarily joins NK.
