    1. Ottoman as a language or a nationality was never a thing, it’s mostly a retrospective scholarly label. People identified by their millet (muslim, rum (greek), armenian, jew etc.), region, tribe etc. Tribal and nomadic Turkic people could call themselves Türkmen and some times Türk. And the Turkic language in the empire was called Türkçe, Lisan-i Türki or Türki.

There were some effort just before the collapse to unite all millets around one Ottoman identity (Osmanlıcılık) but it clearly wasn’t successful.

Guys before the language revolution in Turkey we were talking hugely similar Turkish. Especially in the eastern parts of the country.

In South Azerbaijan we always call ourselves Türks and Azəri only to distinguish ourselves from other Iranian Türks like Qəşqayi, Xələc , Xurasan Türki, etc…

On the north of the Araz River, Türk means being from Türkiye and others Türks are Turkic.

In Türkiye, Türk means anyone Turkic from the Altay mountains all the way to Europe like Kazak, Kıpçak, Türkmen, Rumeli, etc…

    4. For some reason, this saddening to me. The name „Turk“ has been left to us alone. For other Turks, it feels like it’s been forcibly removed. Frankly, I care less about this issue for those in Central Asia.(no offense plz) However, the Turks of Azerbaijan and Anatolia are truly the same origin, the same ancestry, the same nation. We arrived with the Seljuks and spread throughout the Anatolia-Iranian region. However, political and religious changes have isolated us somewhat. Yet, we remain the same nation. The Turks of Azerbaijan and the easternmost regions of Türkiye are almost indistinguishable because there’s a natural transition. I, too, am a Karakoyun and Dulkadir Turk, so perhaps this is a factor in my sadness. Greetings to my brothers and sisters in Azerbaijan🇹🇷

this is pure bullcrap. there was no such time.

      even ottoman constitution from 1876:

MADDE 18.**-** Tebaai osmaniyenin hidematı devlette istihdam olunmak için devletin lisanı resmisi olan türkçeyi bilmeleri şarttır.

the ottomans didn’t even call it osmanlica.
