Every leader has their time in the sun and then eventually, they reach their expiry date. Trudeau was a pretty good PM overall. I’m happy we had him and that he stepped down when he did.
It was a lost decade. It’s really sad, not sunny. Now we’re grappling with it, and it might take decades to recover.
She never (as far as I can tell) notes the Trudeau government’s mismanagement on important files as a reason for the changes in Canadian attitudes on various social topics and progressive projects.
In Delacourt’s pieces, the change in attitudes is always just something ‚that’s happened‘.
Just part of the memory cycle. Look at how people talk about missing the Harper days despite how loathed he was by the end and how people were celebrating in the streets when he got ousted; I imagine it’ll be the same with JT in 4-8 years.
Justin Trudeau’s tenure was filled with scandals. His policies directly exacerbated the housing and the productivity crisis we have today.
He did do some good things for Canada but overall he had a negative impact. A lost decade.
I think you can draw a lot of parallels between Trudeau and Tony Blair when it comes to looking at their legacy – fresh faces who came in with a lot of excitement under a positive, change-focused agenda, the shine ultimately fading away and being quite disliked by the end of their term.
I think like Blair, a bit of distance in terms of time will smooth things over and he’ll be viewed as a middling to OK PM – certainly not among the best but not anywhere near the level of disapproval of his later years.
Name a Prime Minister in the last 50 years who served multiple terms and was still widely popular when they left office.
Smoke and mirrors tends to fade like that, yes. He brought nothing to the table, and stole the table on his way out.
Trudeau was running to govern, not make any great change. From the perspective of 2015, he thought Clinton was going to win in the US, and could not have predicted a once in a generation pandemic. ‘Sunny ways’ was always just politics.
JT will attempt a comeback once there’s some grey in his hair. Political memory is not what it was a decade ago.
