I am defecting to labour ~~in an attempt to keep my job~~ because of the broken promises of Rishi Sunak

You mean ex-wife of convicted Tory sex offender Charlie Elphicke?

Ex-wife who breached the Commons code of conduct in the way she defended Tory sex offender Charlie Elphicke and tried to influence the judge to help out Tory Sex Offender Charlie Elphicke

If I’m Starmer I don’t want that anywhere near my party. She’s a vile woman.

Add in the fact she’s a Boris superfan. In what world is she in line with Labour??

  3. Keir will almost certainly deselect her when it comes to the GE. What an actual charlatan.

Isn’t she the one married to Mr “I’m a naughty Tory”?

I wonder if this would be like the last one, deflects but is going to stand down at the next election?

Labour entering government by Tory defections is a good one for the bingo card!

Really enjoying my Changed Labour Party, finally scrubbed free of the Vile Stain of Racism.

My understanding is people vote for a political party, not really the person in their area.

Why are politicians allowed to change party when they have been voted for by their constituents for that party? Surely they should just have to forfeit their job? Go for re-election under the new party?

That is insane. Mrs UKIP defecting is just weird. Guess they are all fleeing the sinking ship now. I know she was on defection alert, but assumed it was another for Reform….

Does anyone think Starmer is any good at PMQ’s? He always has predictable focus grouped questions that lead to him getting a slap down…

    From today:

He also asked: “How many more times do the public and his own MPs need to reject him before he takes the hint?”

Mr Sunak replied: “This time last year I reminded him of some advice actually from his own mentor Tony Blair who had said at the time he can be as cocky as he likes about local elections but come a general election it is policy that counts.

**“One year on from that advice, what has he managed? £28 billion of tax rises, 70 new business regulations, 30 U-turns and a deputy leader under a police investigation.”**

The defections are just tories desperate to keep their seats after ge.
    Mps just out for themselves

I know parties are somewhat flexible over who they take in defections vs vetting members and new candidates, but her past stated positions are severely at odds with the Labour party and I don’t see how associating with someone who tried to use their status to influence a judge helps a ‘we’re going to put an end to sleaze’ message.

She’s voted for raising the pension age, against landlords paying for safety work, voted for lowering redundancy payments, voted for the Spy Cops Bill, voted against abortion rights, against reducing social care costs, voted against bills for fighting climate change and improving water/air quality, voted for restricting unions and higher tax for low income…

Very funny that Starmer will happily accept someone who wants migrants to drown at sea but kicks out and demonises those who show solidarity for Palestinians. What a guy! Very glad to have such strong opposition to Tory philosophy!

How tf can you change your views and morals overnight from Tory to Labour?

  15. I feel this sort of thing is called real politik. You gotta do what you gotta do, if you lead the opposition.

  16. hammer_of_grabthar on

Is it any wonder those to the left of the electorate feel disenfranchised by a party who’ll welcome as many Tories as want to join

When a Boris lover wants to join, you’ve gone too far

But I’m sure the usual lot will be out acting like it’s ludicrous ideological purity

  17. drewbles82 on

no one should be allowed to defect to another party, you got voted in for being a Tory so the people in your area should get to decide

  18. Spiritual-Bid7460 on

What legal right has any MP got to defy the people that elected them, to just change party without a by election. Obviously it is legal, but shouldn’t be. If you want to change your allegiance it should be mandatory to have a by election and you should be stood down as an MP until after a vote. Makes a mockery of democracy.

  19. I would like a signed apology for every centrist on here who called leftists “tory enablers” for opposing this guy who welcomes people from the right wing of the tories.

  20. Kier Starmer is once again telling you who he is here. Listen to him.

  21. ChefExcellence on

Straightforward but important question for the people defending Labour accepting her: when the next general election finally comes around, if Labour tries to win my vote by telling me they want to stand up for victims of sexual abuse, that they’re the party that’s going to tackle corruption, and uphold justice and the rule of law, how exactly am I meant to take them seriously? How will you be able to?

  22. spacebatangeldragon8 on

She’s apparently not standing in the GE but if she manages to cadge a peerage out of this then my opinion of Starmer will downgrade from ‘low’ to ‘chthonic’.

  23. So let me check, I’ve not seen her voting record, but I suspect she voted against many things that would’ve helped this country, so defects to Labour and if those votes happened again, what this time she’d vote yes to support them!?! Isn’t politics a wonderful thing

  24. What is democracy if people simply flee a sinking ship and join the other party?

What exactly am I voting for if the politicians in the Labour Party were Tories 5 minutes ago?

Call me crazy, but i feel like political parties should be so far apart ideologically, that it would be unfathomable for a politician to simply walk across the aisle except in extrem circumstances. It’s just different types of Conservatives at the moment.
