This Chinese dynasty was like modern America. Its officials and military included Japanese, Koreans, Vietnamese, northern nomads, Central Asian ethnic groups, and more. Passing the national examinations held by the government allowed one to hold important official positions. Persian and Arab merchants were present in the coastal areas. The empire was also home to a wide variety of religions. Neighboring countries sent students and ambassadors to this empire to learn about its system and culture. It was very different from China today.

Technically, Wu Zetian renamed the empire to Zhou Dynasty, only her successor reverted the name change.

Wrong map.
There was Balhae in the Manchuria.
Balhae was established in 698 CE by Dae jo-yeoung, former Goguryeo general. It was consisted mainly Goguryeo refugees(Koreans), Malgal and Khitan.
