EU’s Common Charger Directive requires companies to offer notebook’s without chargers. Due to that Apple simply removed chargers from the new Macbook packages. When they release more powerful M5 Max Macbook Pro, 140W charger it is going to cost 120 EUR extra.

If only the european consumer could do something about It… Wait a minute!

Yeah this sucks for some people but other people like me have been collecting USB-C chargers. When I bought my first Apple Macbook with USB-C in 2016, I bought a secondary 87W USB-C charger. Now almost 10 years later and two more Apple Notebooks, I have 2 x 87W, 1 x 96W and 1x 140W USB-C Apple chargers. All four of them charge a Macbook just fine. Also my dock that I use nowadays can charge with 90W. So I basically have more than enough chargers. If I buy new macbook and it came with a charger I would just thorw that charger to the other unused chargers.

I know that other people circumstances might be very different and they always sold/gave away the charger that came with older devices. But I think with USB-C it is no longer needed to consider charger and device as pair. It also allows competition for chargers. And a lot of chargers are cheaper than Apple’s offering. Although Apple builds really really high quality chargers, so *some* of the price is justified.

The EU directive to minimize e-waste was supposed to make companies offer products optionally without chargers, in case they already have one.

– Old price (MBP M4): 1930 EUR (with charger)
– New price (MBP M5): 1830 EUR (without charger) + 65 EUR (70w charger)

So we are currently at a net profit, but at the same time the dollar has grown weaker, so it’s hard to pinpoint if Apple is ripping us off.

I wonder if Apple lowers the price then. Because if not then for the sake of the environment Apple is happily ripping us off.

For me… this is fine. We have three MacBooks in our house, two USB-C charging iPads and two USB-C phones. Between them, we only have two big and one smaller charger ready to use, the rest only get used when we travel. But I guess we’ll never find out if the new MacBook with a charger is a bit more expensive.

Why buy this, you pay the money and get a rental property with no way to charge it provided by manufacturer, really arrogant move

With the battery life on the Apple Silicone version, and due to Thunderbolt docks and screens with USB-C everywhere these days, I have honestly no idea where mine is right now, haven’t used it in ages.

just make it a checkbox „yes i need a charger“ (free of charge – as we f**ing care for our customers) instead of pointing to some dubious chargers that may exchange data with some malicious outside actor or damage your expensive hardware…

It got cheaper because of it and you can buy a charger for less than the price cut. It’s a good deal actually, Apple charger prices are a rip off, you can buy better for less.

Well, why leave the chance to make another €300?

I can see why honestly. I charge my mbp 14” with my Nintendo switch charger, the new air can be charged with the 20W iPhone brick

This will be a problem for bigger MacBook Pros though, not so many people got 140W bricks laying around and when doing enterprise stuff on your computer, you need bigger wattage

Pretty sure the first major electronic product supplied without a charger was the New Nintendo 3DS in 2014 (Australia) / early 2015 (rest of world)

As soon as that happened, I guessed it would become commonplace even before the EU ruling (unless I’ve got the timeline of the ruling wrong in my head)

Now everything is USBC, I don’t mind. I don’t want countless boxes full of adapters wasting space. Happy with an Anker PD USBC box which powers whatever I throw at it, including my M2 MacBook Pro.

Great for Apple: they will earn more, the price difference is basically the euro getting stronger vs the dollar.

Great for us (maybe); I have 2 GaN chargers that are enough. They cost 60€ and they can reach 140W in a single port (~ 200 in total)

Thank god the EU is solving real problems. I was worried about the German economy declining since 2023, and other EU countries not doing so well either. But now that I see the EU has not only managed to implement yet another needless regulation, but also made Apple richer, I feel reassured.
