Lots of European countries that have better healthcare outcomes with lower tax dollars spent employ a public/private system. People seem to forget that there are other models besides Canada’s entirely single payer system and USAs entirely insurance/out of pocket system.
Since we already spend more while we get poorer outcomes why not try something new instead of just piling more money onto it without seeing better results?
Alberta is spending $28B or 35.3% of its entire budget on health care operating expenses and we still have incredibly long waits.
If a private provider can provide their discipline as well as EFW or Mayfair provide diagnostic imaging, why wouldn’t we want that?
The first thing you see when you walk through the door at either is a great big sign reminding you to have your Alberta Healthcare Card ready. Why would I care about anything else? Do you know the ownership structure of your dentist or doctor’s office? Do you care?
Some initiatives won’t be successful, but neither are all initiatives in government.
