It’s not because consumers don’t want EVs, it’s because the North American auto industry has decided it’s lost the EV race, and has no near term hope of catching up. Chinese cars reign supreme, alongside Chinese battery tech, and supply chains, the only thing to be done is use the power of American protectionism to shield them from the consequences of their poor investment choices and R+D failure.

It turns out when your whole business model is no longer making vehicles people want, but making friends in Washington to keep out the better cars, sending jobs and investment to Ontario isn’t exactly a priority.

At least VW and the Germans know they fucked up, and are desperately trying to enter into joint ventures with Chinese partners, to catch up.
