„$500 drone“ is a broad generalization and often incorrect when assessing the true cost of a fpv drone capable of downing a helicopter.
It’s funny but NATO countries should be worried. This new form of warfare has proven to be successful and defense companies are at risk of becoming shells of their former selves.

Putin thought they would steamroll Ukraine before they could react. He thought Trump would win reelection and it would be easy. When Trump lost, he watched Biden bungle the withdrawal from Afghanistan and decided he wouldn’t effectively support Ukraine, so he gave it a go. The Biden administration apparently gave covert training to Ukraine before the invasion and fed them intelligence which made them much more effective. Coupled with the effects of the kleptocracy hollowing out the Russian military you got stalemate.
Europe is going to have to spin up their own defense industry quickly, because the US is going to pull back once Trump declares an insurrection in the US
Eventually, Putin will give back all the land that he took from Ukraine, including Crimea, and he’ll also be paying for the rebuilding of Ukraine

When the heat-seeking sidewinder was first invented, it was pretty exotic. But with the advances in electronics over the past 60 years, any tank or helicopter that has warm exhaust is vulnerable to very affordable attacks.
High-value assets might have a spread of flares to throw off an incoming heat-seeker, but what does a Russian helicopter do after its deployed its flares, and a second $500 drone is incoming?

With advanced in cheap drones and missiles they will be impossible to use effectively.
Their entire raison d’rtre was to counter massed tank formations, which is now also an obsolete tactic for the same reason.
Even in the wars in Iraq they could barely be used due to the prevalence of cheap AA guns and rpgs being a real threat.
Go read up on the apache squadron that got destroyed when trying to do a thunder run type tactic in 2003 invasion. Like 75% of the choppers were damaged beyond repair or at least enough to be out of action for the entire invasion.

This is one of the reasons the Russia/Ukraine war is being watched so closely by the militaries of other countries.
Remember when spending $16 million on a helicopter was a good investment? And helicopters have always been pretty fragile. Tanks, planes, and ships are also getting taken down by stuff that costs a tiny fraction of what they’d cost to replace.
Countries like the US who spend huge amounts on big ticket items? That’s starting to look like a really bad idea.
Probably safer if they just kept them inside Russia. Same goes for their wanna be cosmonaut tanks and crews. Just a thought.
