I think people’s problem with it; is there’s too many big actors who use it as an excuse to be a dick. He doesn’t do it, but there’s plenty that have.

    2. > “All the recent commentary in the last few years about Method acting is invariably from people who have little or no understanding of what it actually involves. It’s almost as if it’s some specious science that we’re involved in or a cult,” Day-Lewis said when asked by an audience member about his acting process. “But it’s just a way of freeing yourself so that the spontaneity, when you are working with your colleagues in front of the camera, that you are free to respond in any way that you’ll move to in that moment.”

    3. The problem is people (typically men) use method acting as an excuse to be assholes. Anyway, I’m more of a fan of the Stanislavski method.

Also, every time an actor defends method acting, I like to remember this Laurence Olivier quote to Dustin Hoffman: „My dear boy, why don’t you just try acting?“

    4. Jared Leto runs a cult and claims to be a method actor, using it to be abusive to his cast mates (sending Margot Robbie a used condom on the set of Suicide Squad as a method to be the joker, as if the Joker is a sex offender and not Leto)

He’s soiled, like a condom, the name of method acting more than anyone in the past twenty years.

    5. People act like it’s super common to be in character all the time and that’s method acting.

„Oh these actors use it to be a dick!“

You mean Jared Leto right? Like… that’s about it? Is there another actor that went as far as him?

Most method actors don’t. In fact many of our greatest ever actors are method. Because Jared Leto didn’t actually use the method, he just did some amateur shit.

    6. Just an excuse to be an asshole. Dude is a great actor but this shit is getting pretentious.

I’ve heard DDL say that he “needs to make himself believe [he’s] the character, how else could [he] convince anyone else?” And while I love his performances in a lot of stuff, I can’t help but look to the countless number of actors who do it all the time without going to the ridiculous lengths he does.

He’s obviously not Jared Leto, but the guy would have been a pain to work with on a movie like My Left Foot.

There’s a line where it becomes self-indulgent and just masturbatory though.

Day-Lewis caught pneumonia while filming Gangs of New York and allowed himself to get deathly ill as he refused modern medicine because it wasn’t authentic. Do you know what else isn’t authentic to that time period? Multi-million dollar budget films, cameras and entire crews whose livelihoods you are putting on the line with your self-importance.

He also apparently was just roaming around the streets as his character and trying to start fights with regular people. This isn’t methodology, this is just being an asshole.

The issue is that high school theater students do this shit like it’s the only way to be great and just makes you seem like an asshole.
