I’ve linked to the news release in the post above. In this comment, for those interested, here’s the link to the peer reviewed journal article:

From the linked article:
**Men’s brains shrink faster than women’s**: what that means for Alzheimer’s
Women’s brains age more slowly, but that doesn’t seem to protect them from a common form of dementia.
During ageing, men experience a greater reduction in volume across more regions of the brain than women do, according to a longitudinal study published today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences1. The authors suggest **this means that age-related brain changes do not explain why women are more frequently diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease than men are.**
They might’ve forgotten to account for alcohol-use related nerve damage resulting in brain shrinkage, since men typically drink more alcohol than women and may be an explanation for the greater shrinkage observed.
the tight, aerodynamic profile of the male brain moves through Time more efficiently and with less resistance compared to the decadent- ok yeah I have no idea why women get diagnosed more frequently
I’d be interested to see how trans brains measure up in this regard, given some biomarkers seem to match their ‚chosen‘ sex rather than assigned sex. Could be another interesting data point.
Perhaps the explanation is that men use their brains less than women, and hence the tissue atrophies away?
It has to be hormones or chemical differences between men and woman or how men and woman process life events like stress.
Women that do HRT have less dementia, but loads of women were told not to do HRT.
I believe this analysis fails to consider the initial discrepancy in brain size between men and women. It is also worth noting that a significant portion of a mans cognitive function is derived from our genitalia. Despite the potential for greater volume loss in men, our cognitive reserve tends to offset any clinical manifestations. In contrast, women generally possess smaller and less complex brains from birth, resulting in more noticeable dementia symptoms even with minor volume loss. Ok now where’s my Noble prize?
Cause women had to listen to our stupid ideas all their lives and into the time where we’re still saying them but forgetting them.
When my grandfather was diagnosed with a very slow moving Alzheimer’s he had been hiding symptoms for somewhere between five and ten years.
I wonder if it’s more common for men to *not* go to the doctor when they have worrying memory issues, explaining the diagnosis gap.
My half baked hypothesis is that generally speaking women have a sweeter tooth than men. Since we have some hints that the disease is tied with insulin and diabetes, that could explain at least in parts.
