I’m not surprised. I’ve got one GSD and she costs a fair bit to keep fed.
Man’s best friend is going to find themselves at shelters or worse could be dumped at the side of the road.
Obviously this is awful for the dogs…but surely this should be something you factor into when you decide to get a dog?
Edit – you all raise great points regarding inflation. And I don’t mean to sound callous but that is also something most people should be factoring into the decision. Literally nothing costs the same as it did 5 years ago, let alone 15. Why would pet food be any different?
It’s gotten expensive over the past year. We had to move our doggo to new kibble.

Shouldn’t get a dog if you cant afford one.
I’ve three large dogs, the cost of dog food has probably more than doubled in the 9 years since the first of those 3 was adopted. In 2017 I was paying less than 70euro for a bag of hills 10kg dry food, same bag is around 110euro now.
It can become fairly expensive, and this of course causes people to purcahse cheaper food whichc in turn could potentially be causing health issues, where you then need to visit the vet. I think unfortunately for the dogs, a lot of people do not factor in these costs, and some people seem to think they will take care of themselves. When in fact they get to see what you show them, get to go where you take them, and get to eat and drink what you give them, they are completely reliant on you.
I give to Dogs trust, dspca and Irish guide dogs every month.
So should you, even a tenner a month adds up.
My dog has allergies, and is also very fussy…..she won’t eat kibble. We use Butternut Box and it’s €100 every two weeks. Added to her vet plan, insurance, and medication and she’s €500 per month minimum. Good job we love her lol.
