Good for them
The subject is extremely misrepresented by nationalists. Actually their biggest concert is that in two years elections there will be a small minority of Ukraine that could make or break elections when those will be so close..
The process itself is already very long and difficult, with many many requirements that many poles would not pass.
Finally
I find this all a bit weird, considering when Poland joined the EU in 2004, their citizens in significant numbers were happy to go to all the major EU nations, settle down, get citizenship, etc basically saw all the benefits.
Suddenly, in a different way they are dealing with a very small influx in comparison and they’ve suddenly got an issue.
Doesn’t Poland (And pretty much Europe in general) have quite poor demographics? One plus of the US being the US (Blah blah Trump) is that immigration keeps the population up.
I think the problem would be solved by stripping the right to vote of the holders of double-citizenship. No double loyalty. It would also solve the problem of emmigrants who weren’t in country in decades diciding of matters in the country.
I find it kind of funny when Poland cry and moan about immigration when half the country fled as soon as they joined the EU.
Immigration is obviously going to increase compared to the last decades since people can actually work for a normal wage and those who left are now returning with their foreign spouse and children to escape the absolute disaster of house price increases in places like the UK, Ireland and Germany.
Nobody cares. Portugal however, get your fucking geese in a row. Your passport is a joke.
Poland’s interior ministry has presented proposals to toughen the rules for foreigners to obtain Polish citizenship. The new measures would increase the minimum residency period from three to eight years and require applicants to take a test proving they are integrated and sign a declaration of loyalty.
“Being a citizen of Poland is a privilege, but also an obligation towards the state and the community,” wrote the ministry, presenting the new plans. “Polish citizenship is more than just a document; it is a sense of belonging to a community based on values.”
Its proposals come after opposition-aligned President Karol Nawrocki last week presented his own bill to parliament intended to make it harder for foreigners to obtain citizenship. The interior ministry has invited Nawrocki to discuss their respective proposals later this month.
Poland has over the last decade experienced levels of immigration unprecedented in the country’s history and among the highest in the European Union. For six years running between 2017 and 2022 Poland [issued more first residence permits to immigrants](https://notesfrompoland.com/2025/09/16/poland-issues-fewest-residence-permits-to-immigrants-in-ten-years/) from outside the EU than any other member state.
One consequence has been a growing number of foreigners receiving Polish citizenship, which was [granted to a record 16,342 people last year](https://notesfrompoland.com/2025/08/29/record-number-of-foreigners-granted-polish-citizenship-in-2024/), four times more than a decade earlier.
However, that has prompted a growing backlash, including [large-scale anti-immigration protests](https://notesfrompoland.com/2025/07/19/thousands-join-anti-immigration-marches-around-poland/), prompting the government to last year introduce a [tough new immigration policy](https://notesfrompoland.com/2024/12/18/polish-government-approves-tough-new-migration-and-asylum-rules-to-take-back-control-of-borders/). For high qualified it must be 5 or even 3.
Doesn’t make sense to have less than in Germany.
Other countries should make it harder for poles too.
This is the way current goverment is shooting itself in the foot. They are trying to appease right windgers which will never vote for them any way, and they will loose the center and the left. You aleady have to spend minimum 8 years to even apply for Polish citizenship. People will just go to other EU countries, get citizenship there easier and then come to Poland, or not come at all after that. Which ofcourse is the wet dream of the pro russian right wing. Lets leave EU after that so we stop the freedom of movement.
