So for Liberals, closer ties with India’s far right government that killed Canadians on Canadian soil is more acceptable than any ties at all with China, which would likely actually benefit Canadians economically
This is complete bullshit. The Indian government helped pp win CPC leadership race and they got away with it. The Indian government assassinated an Canadian on Canadian soil and consequences were min. The current government of India is aligned with Harper’s IDU. They have a state sponsored gang that we recently declared an terrorist organization. The current government of India is not an ally.
The problem with Indian foreign interference in Canada hasn’t gone away.
A closer economic relationship will hand India more leverage, and make it more capable of shaping Canadian economic and politics to its benefit.
Less ties with India please, that country is absolutely horrible and provides basically nothing we can’t get else where while also openly interfering on Canadian soil
I have no idea how the Liberals plan on selling this to Canadians. Even if you wanted to improve the relationship, this seems to be moving far too fast for everyone’s comfort
Trudeau’s hysterical reaction to India’s actions a year ago were a catastrophic mistake and I’m glad Carney is taking a more sensible approach to relations with New Delhi. The United States under Biden communicated their displeasure with Indian actions against Sikh extremists through diplomatic back channels rather than turning them into a national melodrama and they were right to do so.
You’d think after the H1-B debacle in the States and the assassination of the Khalistani separatist in Surrey we would have learned our lesson.
Guess not.
I guess we’re repairing ties with both China and India due to economic compulsions, but I do hope we continue defending our sovereignty and against foreign interference from these 2 countries.
I don’t disagree with the fact that extremist entities from the Indian diaspora were victims of Indian state aggression, but nothing justifies a violation of our sovereignty. We should work together to neutralise extremism.
I don’t love it. But if we’re going to reduce our reliance on the US we’re going to have to stop pretending we’re in a great position. We really, *really* aren’t. The US dominates us in every way and would probably gut us easily is they weren’t busy sabotaging their own economy and picking a fight with literally everyone.
Well we could stand on our soapbox and trade with nobody but that doesn’t work. We will trade with India. We will trade with China. We will trade with the U.S., Europe and others. The key is not having all our eggs one one basket. Carney is expanding our options. This is a win.
India will inevitably have to hand over those responsible for carrying out these terrorist attacks against Canadians on Canadian soil to stand trial in Canada.
There just won’t be any way for the Federal Government to skirt around that once the American prosecution concludes and the numerous different Canadian Crown prosecutions start.
They can create whatever roadmap they want, but there is an obvious roadblock in the way.
Those responsible are inevitably going to have to go jail in order for this relationship to move forward.
I suspect Anand and Carney have made this clear the same as Trudeau did.
Trudeau should have confirmed if the whole Sikh separatism thing was a Canadian interest or had become his pet issue against India.
His effort to provoke the topic and then let it damage relations with India only for Carney to immediately move past it says a lot.
