As the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers showed in a survey a few years ago, something like two thirds of engineering grads already never find work in engineering.  There’s probably a good argument for trying to attract a few of the very best and brightest at the top of the market, but that’s a problem for industry to solve with their own money.  The government should be steering people away from already overcrowded fields.

Of the original batch of H-1B tech workers who were let in, I want the Canadian government to ask: where are they now?

Are they employed? Is it meaningful employment? Did they even find a job or are they still searching? Are they still in Canada? How long did they stay in Canada before they left? Are they facing the same employment struggles as domestic tech workers?

Because whatever lobby is begging the Canadians government to accept these tech workers, I want the Canadian government to ask for an answer of the high unemployment rate of tech jobs right now. Because fine, we accept them. Then what? What jobs are we accepting them into?

Sure, some tech companies will gladly poach them. But what about the rest of the H-1B workers unlucky to get these jobs? They’ll just join the other Canadian tech workers who were laid off and still looking, or the new grads eager for any company to give them a chance. It’s a slap to the face of struggling tech workers right now.

Tech workers especially with AI skills can be 2 to 4x more in USA.

Nurses make more
Everyone makes more and gets taxed less.

So what is our pitch to attract or retain?
