This is so short-sighted. Biden could seize the opportunity to finally get rid of Hamas, then force the hands of everyone so that the Palestinian Authority takes control of Gaza and pave the way to a Palestinian state. Instead he’s stopping just short of actual virtory, and forces the hands of everyone to keep Hamas in power. It’s not even making the war easier on the Palestinian people, Hamas does everything it can to keep the war from ending by using the hostages as leverage and in the meantime their subjects live in tents. Biden knows he can’t get the war to end without Hamas agreeing to it, and that Hamas has no incentive to end the war, but he can’t figure out what that means so he flails his hands angrily at everyone he can hoping to create a good impression for his constituents.

There are three players in this tragedy: Hamas are the evil maniacs, Israel is led by an incompetent, corrupt and unpopular government, and the US’s idea of a moral war is a very long one that ends in defeat instead of a short and decisive one. The war could have ended 4 or 5 months ago if Israel hadn’t stopped to negotiate forever, but instead it might even drag on for years. The end result is that Hamas gets to keep its power, no viable Palestinian state, it will take longer before the reconstruction of Gaza begins, and on top of that Hamas will start another war with Israel in a couple of years which will cause yet more casualties on both sides.

Not to mention that Israel is also being bombarded from the north, and that front might blow up at any time. How is the White House going to solve that problem? Prevent Israel from fighting there too?

It’s been said that the US is good at arming its allies enough to survive when attacked, but not enough to win. Israel and Ukraine are two glaring examples.

  2. Today’s Palestinians will suffer more with immediate conflict, but future generations of Palestinians will live far better lives for it if Hamas is wiped out. This is the cost a society must pay to destroy the genocidal regime that controls them.

I think the only people this will piss off is the Israeli (and American) far-right that have barely concealed their specific intent of wanting to ethnically cleanse Gaza and make it suitable for Jewish settlement.

For every other reasonable person, Jewish, Muslim and others, this is good thing. It will hopefully force Netanyahu to make more surgical/precision strikes against Hamas targets instead of trying to bomb out entire neighborhoods that had Hamas command points underground.

The consequence is that it will also mean he will be forced to send in IDF soldiers to essentially go door-to-door, and tunnel-to-tunnel. This would be much more humane, but Israel will be forced to sacrifice a lot more Jewish lives because these places will likely have plenty of booby traps… and I’m guessing Israel doesn’t have a lot of disposable drones available to get rid of the booby traps beforehand.

This is all only valid if Israel doesn’t already have some giant bombs to use now, though.

As expected, comments are a damn shit show. People, Israel has one of the lowest civilian casualty rates of all urban warfare. That includes the current Gaza conflict. Urban warfare is fucking brutal, the average civilian casualty rate is 90%. One militant for every nine civilians. The US-Iraq war was nearly 80%, according to Iraq Body Count. Israel is nowhere near those numbers even using the linear, fake, only women and children numbers provided by ~~Gaza~~ Hamas Health Ministry. It’s also worth noting that this is the first engagement in history where the IDF’s numbers didn’t match the Gaza Health Ministry. So why is that? Prior to Oct 7th, Gaza Health Ministry only accepted tallies from doctors or medical professionals. This engagement? They get their data from “trusted sources.” Congratulations, you’ve learned that war is bad and literally no one wins in war. Stop helping fucking terrorists by believing their bullshit because you’re too fucking stupid to actually look at the facts.

Let the protesting college students in the US go over and handle the peace and humanitarian aid in Gaza.

    This is performative nothing:

    >”The US position has been that Israel should not launch a major ground operation in Rafah, where more than a million people are sheltering with nowhere else to go,” the White House administration official said.

    >”We have been engaging in a dialogue with Israel in our Strategic Consultative Group format on how they will meet the humanitarian needs of civilians in Rafah, and how to operate differently against Hamas there than they have elsewhere in Gaza.

    >”Those discussions are ongoing and have not fully addressed our concerns. As Israeli leaders seemed to approach a decision point on such an operation, we began to carefully review proposed transfers of particular weapons to Israel that might be used in Rafah. This began in April.

    >”As a result of that review, we have paused one shipment of weapons last week. It consists of 1,800 2,000lb bombs and 1,700 500lb bombs. We are especially focused on the end-use of the 2,000-lb bombs and the impact they could have in dense urban settings as we have seen in other parts of Gaza. We have not made a final determination on how to proceed with this shipment.”
