    1. > „Once I found out that John’s father had died when he was 5, I said, ‚Okay, that’s something that never leaves you. That’s something that he wrestled with for his entire life. How? What’s that?‘ “ he recalled at the screening at Kings Theatre in Brooklyn, N.Y.

      > Hanks continued: „And then when I connected with Chris, he had mentioned that [John] had just started to do that therapeutic work that a lot of people do in their 40s, specifically white men in their 40s — they should all be doing therapy. And so once I found out that he had started to do that work and was really starting, that got me going, that really got me thinking, ‚Okay, what are the coping mechanisms that he learned as a kid that kept him alive, that made him who he was?‘ „

Every dude regardless of age or race should be doing therapy.

Took until I had a breakdown and my first marriage fell apart before I decided to go to therapy. It’s helped me immensely.

He isn’t wrong. Actually not limited to white men. There are a lot of stigma on men doing therapy that need to be dismissed.

I think it’s kinda sick that people in therapy can’t just get better and feel the need to turn it into the new vegetarians. Like it makes me uncomfortable that you are so damaged you can’t trust anyone else who isn’t getting the serious mental health that you require . Therapy is great . Now get back I there and leave everyone alone

    5. Or we could all stop assuming that what works for an individual „must be what everyone else needs too“ because that level of thinking is selfish and childish. I don’t need therapy. I’m glad those who do go get it but no not everyone needs to do the same thing and how ridiculous is it that I even have to bring that up? Can we stop doing this shit? Everyone always fees like they need to tell everyone else what to do. Just do your own thing and keep it to yourself. If others are interested, they’ll ask about it.

Oh yeah the “I’m one of the good ones, I’m so evolved and I can wag my finger at others because I’m so much better” schtick

So let’s take a look at what was actually said:

“ he had mentioned that [John] had just started to do that therapeutic work that a lot of people do in their 40s, specifically white men in their 40s — they should all be doing therapy. ”

First, it’s important to note that this wasn’t the main point of the interview. It seems to be an offhand comment made during a conversation. It sounds controversial, so it gets turned into a headline. This is just a basic bad journalism.

Second, it sounds like he’s actually saying that a lot of white men start doing therapy in their 40s. (in his social circle that might be true) he goes on to say that he thinks all of them should be doing it. The comment doesn’t seem intended to exclude people of color or women. It just seems like he made an observation that white men in their 40s seem to do a lot of therapy and that is good.

Third, even if he was saying that all middle-aged white men should be doing therapy, I’m not sure that’s a problematic thing to say. He might just be focusing on that group because he feels he can speak for that group since he’s part of it. Maybe he doesn’t think it’s appropriate to say all middle-aged men in general should be doing therapy since he’s not familiar with their lived experience.

Overall, I think it’s an interesting idea but that’s not really what the interview was about. It seems like the journalist is trying to generate controversy.

Everyone regardless of age or gender should at the very least get mental health checkups. And they should have affordable access to them.

I wish I could afford $200 an hour per visit. Per week or whatever it is.

This assumes there are enough competent therapists in the world to go around.

What a strange headline to extract from that article.

    12. White men go to therapy and try to live longer. Non white men go die young 😆

Two of the three therapists I know IRL are awful people. One (a woman) raped a patient & lost her license in that state, so just moved to another state and got certified there. No background check or anything, and she is working with inpatients. I will never trust a therapist. Ever.

My therapy are the 1-2 hours I spend playing guitar in the garage every weekend mornings. Followed by coffee and making my fiancé and her daughter breakfast shortly after.

Am I doing it right, Colin?

Sounds like this whole comment section needs therapy…or anger management.

      That’s entertainment.
