In civilised countries preschool is part of the State school system.
Don’t have kids.
We finished up with big childcare costs a couple of years ago. We employed a minder in our home so never qualified for any of the crèche subsidies.
Despite the costs it was 100% worth it to keep both of us in the workforce. I saw too many women pack it in and then find it almost impossible to resume a career at the same level when the kids were older unless they had a civil service career break type arrangement.
The cost is obviously high but the bigger problem is the availability. We have so many people who want to work but are unable to as they can’t get a place for their child and many others driving all over clogging up the roads as they could get a place but it’s miles from where they live. The govt have made a baseless promise of €200 childcare and done pretty much nothing else. Their strategy of trying to get childcare centres to freeze their rates at 2021 levels is also ridiculous and will become a huge issue soon. Imagine we tried to freeze TD salaries and expenses at 2021 levels…
The whole world is capitalist trap game, live with the stress of mortgage and worry if you are able to afford little Jimmys school equipment and work till you die. Humans have lost parasites have won.
Greed has ruined every joy out of life, even recipe for a simple chocolate bar.
We need to make it possible for couples to survive on one income.
The government should invest in ensuring that parents who would like to stay at home and rear their kids have that option. We’ve put a lot of energy and money into forcing both parents to work
I would love to be able to have a child with my fiancé but there’s no way we can afford it.
I went to university, have been worked since I was 15. Very disheartening.
Childcare costs are too high.
Childcare wages are too low.
Someone’s making bank on what happens between the two.
We had two kids in the crèche, and each cost us more than our monthly mortgage. Then the Greens got into the government and gradually cut our bill by more than half. Then we voted them out, and the childcare fees started creeping up again. Fortunately, the kids are in school now, and the afterschool prices are much lower, but with the current government’s record, we are hoping to get out of that cost before one of us parents will have to go part time.
Costs are even higher in Belfast than Dublin and our wages are shit. I don’t know how people afford it, most don’t.
Just wait till your kids have to move out for college
